Dealership Oil Change???

My E90 335i is due for an oil change. Given this is the first oil change since I bought the car 2007 CPO with 40k miles, I am thinking it would be beneficial to have them do the service.

Does anyone have an opinion?

How much does it cost (assuming a lot)?

Is it easy to have another shop do the service and then somehow code that the service was performed through the iDrive system?

Thanks for any help/suggestions.

My dealer charges about $105 but often offers a coupon for an $80 change.

Parts are about $70 online at Tischer BMW.

So lucky. I was quoted $135 + $75 (scope reset) = $210 for oil change in SD.

Dude! What dealer quoted this to you? Brecht? (they are a rip off!) I have been buying cases of Mobil 1 at Costco whenever they were on sale and get Mann filters 10 at a time off ebay for my E46. Changed the oil every 7-8k miles as Mobil 1 10-30 is not long life rated like the Mobile 1 0-40. Total oil change cost was about $38 -$40... Also I have a Peak Research code reader that resets the oil/service light (cost was only $140 new).

What is a "scope reset" for $75? I just got my 2008 335i last week and I am starting to research the correct oil type, filters, and a "code reader" for it... Looks like Burgertuning.com sells a Bavarian Technic cable (use with laptop) that will reset codes and the service light for only $150 with the purchase of a "tuner" (considering only a JB+ rather than the JB4 as California gas sucks...).

Just got my oil changed for $80 at Shelly BMW, and considering the life of the oil/filter, I can definitely wait until they have a special again!

It is nice that you bought a Peale tool, but you do not need it to do a reset. Search all 3 series reset and there is a nice video how to reset the CBS.

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

I would add that you can save $$$ going to a plain vanilla shop for a change. For me, it saves me $ and is much more convenient than driving a considerable distance to the dealer.

If you consider a non-dealer, I found that I had to make it unambiguously clear about what was acceptable oil, that is, LL01, or basically Mobil 1 0-40 or BMW oil. A non-dealer, non-bmw specialist may try to convince you that any full synthetic will do; I had to insist.

Dealer's oil sucks. BMW LL-01 is nothing compare to mobile 1. If the area you live in goes below 0C use 0-w40. If it never goes below 10C and if you want more protection, you may use 5-w50 (what I am using now but it will produce less hp). You don't have to always follow the LL-01 cert. Just my 2 cents.
I think I am going to try 10-w60 in next service.

BMW recommends (depending on where you live) Castrol, however my dealer uses Elf. The viscosity is 5W-30 I think.
