Hi Guys,

I am planning my Scotland / highland road trips at the moment. Wonder if any of you got some 'best' roads in your mind? please list them out!

A830 Fort William to Mallaig - fast sweeping bends, good road surface and fantastic scenery.

It's simple. Stick to the west coast and you won't be disappointed. The east coast is just one big long motorway with speed cameras every 100 yards.

My advice would be to drive all the way west, ferry from Gourock to Dunoon, drive to Portavadie then ferry to Tarbert. Drive from Tarbert down to Machrihanish/Campbelltown and enjoy the beaches. The reason for this part of the journey is that very few people ever visit the Kintyre penninsula and it really is worth is. From machrihanish/Campbeltown head towards Oban then up towards Fort William. Anything north of Fort William will be twisty windy fun with great views.

To be honest it's pretty hard to go wrong with this part of the country.

Make sure you go all the way to Durness/John O'G.

Oh and definitely don't miss the minor road that goes over the top to Appledore - "pass of the cattle" or something in gaelic - I'll have to look it up now...

Heading here myself and Ullapool direct also seems to be good, the more I look the more I see. No way I'll be able to fit it all in, but really looking forward to the trip as its something I wanted to do for years.

There a tons of great routes, often people talk of the Highlands but there are great roads all over.

I've been lucky enough to spend a few years driving all over the country. I've been right out into the arse end of nowhere, drove to the end of many single track roads, places I'd never have went of my own volition and pretty much all of them have been great.

The west coast gets good press but for example some of the best roads are in rural Aberdeenshire, my advice don't discount anything. Even the A9 which does have some cameras (the most northerly being at Blair Atholl iirc) is a good drive and it's the quickest way to get to the Highlands if that is what you are after.

I started putting a route together on Google Maps, it's 1100miles and there's a lot more I'd like to add

Whichever route you pick I'm sure you'll love it! If you plan to do it in the summer then be warned the A9 and A82 will be busy. These two roads are the tourist highway and will be full of coaches, caravans, trucks and car club convoys.

Reached home at 4am yesterday!

Thanks for all the suggestions and recommendations of the roads...etc.

The trip was simply amazing, as well as driving! I will upload some photos when I have settled down and sort out the car.

The car played up a little bit, and turned into limp mode after some A road driving! Just read some code this afternoon, turned out to be Vanos Solenoid, think the car needs to visit dealership soon, and hope its covered under the extended warranty!
