Trading in - who pays for the MVI?

Just trying to get a feel for everyone else's experience. If you trade in a car when buying your BMW, the dealership has to perform a MVI (motor vehicle inspection) before they can sell it to anyone else. The question is, who should have to pay for that MVI?

It's only $20, but I'm surprised that my BMW dealership is being petty enough to charge me for it. I'm buying a $60k car and they're charging me $20 to MVI my trade in. Unbelieveable.

Thoughts?

Petty is the right word for it, unless they are selling it on a commission basis for you.

Nope, they're not selling it for me, I'm doing a convenience trade through the dealership. So, I advertise my car, find a buyer, haggle a price, and then I bring the car and buyer to the BMW dealership where BWW essentially buys the car from me and sells it to my buyer at the same price.

There's no difference to my buyer as he has to pay tax either way (to the BMW dealership or to the province when he registers the car), but then I only pay tax on the difference between the purchase price of my new car and the convenience trade price. The only caveat is that the dealer can't sell to my buyer without doing an MVI, which costs me $20 (but probably costs them $10 to do).

Basically, I feel that charging me the $20 is petty and stupid on a $60K purchase.

They probably figure it's no big deal for you, it's your car, and a bookkeeping hassle for sales to pay service dept. Bean counters. Vogons.

I appreciate being called stupid, thanks.

It's not the money, it's the principle of it...hence the term "petty". If it was about the cost, I wouldn't complain about it being "petty", I'd be complaining that it was too expensive.

I would talk to them and ask them why they would try to nickel and dime you. Tell them its not the $20 but the fact they they would have the nerve to ask for it. Its the prinicipal behind it.
