Ive got a E90 pre LCI and after driving around some country roads the last couple of evenings I really need to upgrade the lighting, as im unable to finance a full lighting upgrade it down to some new lamps. But which ones?

Im looking at Osram Night breaker unlimited or Phillips X-treme Vision.

Any preferences amongst you lot?

I have the Phillips X-treme Vision, and they are ok.

They are definitely not White if thats of any concern to you.

I don't drive all that much in pitch-black country roads so it is difficult to say if they really made much difference.

They cost me about £11, and I needed to replace one bulb anyway. So for the money I think that was ok.

I have seen some cars with halogen lights that are much brighter and a very white light, maybe somebody knows what these are.

I use Mtec bulbs they are quite white and bright and light up the road quite well

I have osram Nightbreakers currently and made a bid difference as all my driving tends to be in the dark and country roads..

I work in the middle of nowehere and do shifts so its always dark ha!

However, i have now upgraded to oem xenons so thats abit different all together ha!

But i recommend the nightbreakers

I have used osram nightbreakers and found them not that much better than standard oem halogen bulbs, have now fitted the 100% Ring halogen bulbs and am very pleased with their light output

"White" does not mean that it is bright. All blue coloured lamps throw less light on the road. It is the light on the road that counts and not how white they look straight on. Osram night breaker and philips xtreme vision have one or two blue bands in such a way as to block less of the filament output and are perhaps the brightest. I have tried both and I prefer Philips since it is better focussed and the reach is better. The down side of it is that the high power lamps have a terrible longevity and need frequent replacement. This means the 120% brighter lamps have a shorter life span than 80 or 90% lamps. BMW has a bad lamp changing technique. You have to reach under the front wheel arch. Less need for lamp change the better! Take all that into consideration before you decide. Stay away from blue bulbs.

honestly though, I have to do something, and if it means changing out the lights a bit more often sod it! im planning on trading the car in in March anyway, so if they last until then ill be happy.

Yeah, the access doesn't look the greatest, but ive seen worse. ever tried fitting them on a rover 75? you need 2 foot long 3 inch wide arms and only 3 fingers.

I had nightbreakers on an old car (not BMW though) they were a great improvement on light distance.

I bought two sets of Ring +100% a few years back for mine and my Wife's car. Three of the bulbs failed within the year - However they produced fantastic bright white light.

I bought some Phillips Xtreme Vision. In comparison they were probably not as bright as the Ring's, a little yellowish but still vastly improved other the stock bulbs.

I'm half tempted by the Phillips Diamon Vison Bulbs which produce 5000k output - the only issue is they are not road legal in the UK - as do not carry the "E" mark.

I'm using Night Breaker Plus (some special gold edition ones?) And think they are a slight improvement over stock but nothing too amazing. I just think the halogen lights on E90s are a bit rubbish and for any decent improvement the whole unit needs upgrading.

Obviously doesn't make sense for you to do that if you're getting rid of the car in a few months though...

Exactly. Will see what sort of costs etc are involved when I get my next one.
