Head Prefect wins Labour leadership...

...He always looks like, and sounds like, a gormless, head prefect .... I think the Labour party is about to have its metaphorical short trousers taken down and spanked.

He has the standard Politico CV...... PPE from Oxford, career in Politics, Londoner who represents Northern constituency and therefore pretends to be in touch with real people.

I don't think he will trouble DC at the despatch box!

There will be a reduction in uniformed servicemen of about 30,000 - 35,000 over the next 4 years. The Navy will probably reduce by 20% in manpower (6,000 ish) and ships - all announced in about 3 weeks. This is my informed estimate, I do not have any inside tracks. The size of the MoD civil servants will be cut by about 25%!

My part of the Navy will be as safe as I think that the Govt will commit to the Trident submarine replacement.

Sorry Peter, but I have met him and he is no-ones fool. In person he seems to be a very 'down to earth' and 'normal' bloke. Not a typical politician at all.

Will be interesting to see what he does.

Yeah, and he can do a Rubik's cube in 1 min 20 sec - with one hand! Also, he went to a comprehensive school. Finally, someone who isn't yet another public school tool.

NFS, I am sure he is, I clearly have never met him. No one at that level of politics is anyones fool. However, his media persona is where I get the schoolboy analogy. He has also said a few things about taxation which mean he will not necessarily occupy the centre ground. He wants to appeal to the 'Labour working class core voter' (his words not mine), I am not sure such people exist in great numbers. We live in an aspirational society and pigeon holing people like that is dangerous.

Comprehensive School followed by the 'Politicians finishing school' - Politicics, Philosphy and Economics at Oxford - like quite a few others, including Cameron.

The general expectation was that David would win, but I think people worry that he is tarnished by close association with Gordon Brown.

Ironically, David was very close to Blair, wheras Ed was Gordons assistant in the old days.

Look at it like this - had MilliD won for Continuity New Labour, the abuse (rightly) would have been aimed at the Iraq war, his involvement in torture etc. Having lost an election nothing would have changed. MilliE at least offers a fresh perspective of someone not tainted by the Blair era.

None of the three leaders were the obvious candidates. Cameron was losing badly to David Davis right up to the conference that year. Clegg beat Who-He by a dodgy 500 votes. And Ed beat his brother whose campaign was " vote for me I will win".

What will change? Lets see. The cuts need to be attacked as the ideological smashing they are. We have a not excessive deficit created mainly by the drop in tax receipts from the recession. We can cut the deficit much quicker by growing the economy - as witnessed by the £20bn drop before the election - than by killing growth and cutting services and benefits. Are there scroungers out there? Yes. Can we cut the flab off various things? Yes. But thats not the current plan - evisceration is.

If Ed can combat Oik with some basic economics then he's onto a winner. If.

Glad his brother David didn't win.
Not sure I'd ever want "Johnny cab" from Total Recall in the driving seat of our country.

Didn't spot the resembalance. but now you mention it, spot on!!

Me being a labour man I was disappointed by Ed over David. David clearly looks and feels like a statesman who seems to know what he's talking about. Ed looks like a teenager in comparison. I don't base my political leadership descisions based on looks but alot of people do and this isn't going to help the labour party.

I'm sure all you "blues" where delighted that our "reds" future captain has been displaced by the tea boy.

I'm not going to completely dismiss Ed, but would have really prefered David. Totally agree with what he "mouthed" to Harriot Harman about people voting for the Iraq war and yet clapping when Ed says it was wrong...in future, think about voting for stuff before voting for it.

surely if they voted for the best looking one gordy wouldnt have stood a dogs chance. as for thinking about what they are voting for surely this is not allowed in the labour party. no thinking about it they cant cast their votes on looks, neil kinnock, michael foot, defininately not.

If I was particularly interested in politics or indeed a supporter of the labour party, out of the two brothers, I would have voted for David as imo he is the better orator and commands more of a presence, certainly on TV.

What gets me with many of them is how with time, they become champagne socialists laced with inverted snobbery and clearly shit on the 'type of people' they claim to support and who voted them into the position. It's happened before many times even at local council level with Derek Hatton etc.

What I found interesting was Ed's comment at the Labour conference aimed at the union bosses, (one of whom whose name and union I can't remember but earns around £200k p.a. and has a union house in Surrey ), saying he won't tolerate 'silly strikes' etc. Knowing the media would be focused on their reaction, the two union blokes sitting next to each other tried to hide their dis-pleasure at Ed's comments but their body language clearly gave them away. Probably thinging 'fu*king great, and we got you the job matey'.

Politics really does bring out the best and worst in people no matter what party they belong to.

If you want the best people you have to pay them the best salary.

They'll be going off to Frankfurt or Hong Kong in this Global Union market if we dont pay them enough. Or does that rule only apply to bankers?

I agree though comrade it does rather stink of Champagne Socialists.

Just off for another bottle of Bolly
