"This confirms what I've been saying all along," confirmed Austin mayor Lee Leffingwell. "[Namely] that the city would be contributing no up-front money, and that the city would not be at risk,"
Surely, that is a bit of a snooty responce isn't it? I mean, Austin as a City is going to IMMENSELY benefit from hosting this race.

For them to not really put anything into it.. I don't know. It just sounds a bit off.

At least the race looks good to go. I'm happy about that.

Any word when that's going to take place? Just hope f**ing Ticketmaster is not involved. And also that they don't let ticket scalpers buy the bulk of them . It's a freaking disgrace. Tickets are already expensive enough to put up with that crap.

There is a saying that Austinites are fond of: "Keep Austin Weird". It is apt, IMO.

This makes me not want to spend a dime in the city out of principle of them not funding the track. I will only spend money at the racetrack facilities and those affiliated. You know that all of the businesses in Austin are going to do very well for the 2 weeks before and after the race weekend. I for one am going to the race but there is no way that i would be going to Austin if the race wasn't there.

I think you would change your mind real quick once you got there. The place is pretty much the shit.

Give them a season. Once the season sees how much income pours in over a race weekend, they'll go out of their way to keep the grand prix on the F1 schedule.

I agree with you on the location, though. I'd never go to Austin either, if it weren't for Formula 1. I'm still hoping that F1 will set up shop on one of the coasts in the future. If only someone had cash to revamp the facilities at Laguna Seca or Watkins Glen... I can dream, right?

^^ i did say the city and not the state. I do know that they are not going to get the 25 million if they don't approve this 4 million.
"Formula 1 organizers need the city to sign off on the agreement because it will unlock $25 million in yearly funding from the state of Texas."

i am working out the math here, if like projected that 120k+ (some say 300K+ in the city) people are going to be at the event that means that the city is going to have to collect $33.34 in revenue from each person to break even on their 4 million. I really don't think that is going to be hard...
Sales tax in Austin is 8.25% so if the average per person spends $500 total in the city (hotel rooms, taxis, food, merchandise, etc.) they create $41.25 in revenue. $7.91 left over giving them almost a million dollars additional just for the weekend. $400 per person would be the breakeven. This doesn't seem outrageous...

more facts about the race in Austin
300 million economic impact annually
$600 million television viewers worldwide in 188 countries
Global “star power” presence, second only to the Oscars
300,000 people attending the event over the weekend
More than 1,500 construction jobs
1,200 temporary jobs associated with the Grand Prix event
350 temporary jobs with each additional racing event

Already booked a hotel room. Planning on attending Fri-Sunday. Hopefully it all works out and the race happens!
