Believe it or not, I have owned a 11' and 12' Jetta TDI and a 10' and 11' 335D.

Jetta TDI:

1. had all the basics such as decent stereo, bluetooth, streaming music, nice touch screen...handling was abit loose(even worse than newer Honda Accord) esp. if you're used to german steering feel....got great mileage as I averaged between 38-44 mpg doing 75% freeway...had crappy headlights(no HID)...had some steering torque...quick but not fast...didnt have sexy exterior(kinda dull looking)....brakes just ok....the trunk was huge and spacious inside...interior felt kinda cheap though with more plastic and cheap lighter feeling doors...had diesel fumes coming into cabin at times which was annoying.

335D with sports pkg:

1. Has tons of torque...sports pkg has good steering feel and handles abit more sloppy compared to stock M3 but somewhat close...with sports pkg(a must for me), stiff enough to not have a lot of body roll...good exterior looks...the thing I don't like is the turbo lag(especially when driven in auto mode)...put it into DS or manual and turbo lag a lot better...very good brakes...also, the carbon issues are significant(I personally wouldn't own this car without CPO as its too risky for me anyway). Old 335D got 29mpg and newer one gets 27.5-28.5mpg...interior of the BMW's are abit long in the tooth when you buy the 09-11' models.

I think the 335D with sports pkg and CPO is the best daily driver out there for a non-sports car...it is very reasonably priced used...cant think of a better car for 30-35K.

Is it going to be as reliable as a Japanese car no, but no Japanese car feels like a BMW either. Lastly, I wouldn't buy a 335D without sports pkg cause without it suspension feels loose and sloppy ... imho, then it feels too close to the Jetta.

Having owned both now, I wouldn't ever buy a Jetta TDI again as long as car like the 335D is around.

I recall reading in past threads the 2009 335d has the 6hp26 transmission. Where as the 2010 / 11 has the 6hp28 transmission which has a higher torque rating.

Realoem has GA6HP26Z for all years of the 335d (Europe and USA/CA.)
X5 also shows 26 for the last year.

I can confirm that my 2010 335d has the 6hp28 gearbox. There was indeed a change in transmission from 2010 onward.

Purchased mine new 10/2011. No regrets. No problems…at least yet. Ideal blend between power/sport/economy for me. A few changes/upgrades have made a substantial improvement for me -- Michelin Pilot Sports/Bilstein Eibach suspension --- feels very planted and dialed in --- even more than with stock sport. I have accepted that I have more into the car that I would loose if I were to part with it that it potentially may cost me down the line in repairs and I honestly as hard as I try cannot find another vehicle that performs/handles/returns the milage that this one does…..and I have driven many different ones in search of a reasonable replacement. Only thing that feels close is a used M3 but picking one up would cost me more with lost money and higher price than the potential cost of repairs….I could be wrong in my long term math but that is how I see things….good luck and enjoy.

I feel the same way...in that nothing else car wise excites me like the 335d. I've considered Lexus and Acura brands but they don't offer a diesel performance/economy combo that one gets with the 335d. I like to enjoy what I drive since I tend to keep my cars for a while. I could go out and buy a Prius and get a newer car with excellent fuel economy, but I know that I would be very bored with the driving experience. BMW1983, how many miles do you have on your 335d?

I just turned 40K on mine and it's throwing codes. I had it sold but ran the BT program and picked up a few codes, so I told the buyer and she backed out, which is fine with me. Don't need any bad kharma.

Any chance BMW will goodwill the repair considering the low miles?

The dealer was going to give me 21.5 and sell me a X1 35i for invoice but I drove it a few miles and did not like it at all.

At times I feel that driving a 335d and enjoying it like I do but knowing there is the potential for an expensive repair at some point beyond 7/100K (plan on keeping maximum warranty as long as possible) will be a true rendition of the statement "pay to play"….pretty sad though….but doesn't appear to affect all...

Same question. If you're comparing the X1 to the 335d, well, that's :roll eyes:

But the X1 we bought for my wife is a BLAST. With a tune and the M5 rep wheels it is an absolute beast and very sensible at the same time.

I thought the ride was terrible , but the roads around here are awful. Lots of cheap plastic and where's the torque I keep reading about? Just could not warrant $47,000 for it.

How do you like it so far? I rode (don't know how to drive stick ) one at small autocross track a while back with a friend and I kept giggling like a little schoolgirl. Cannot believe how quick and nimble that little hatchback is! Pics pics pics!

Only have 200 miles on it, but so far I really like it. They should have called it the Fiesta JRT as in Jack Russell Terrier, because that's the kind of personality it has. Extremely stiff, hyper quick steering and a very torquey motor. Also, the Recaro seats are great. Wish my 335d had them, for sure. Haven't taken any photos but here's what it looks like.

Getting close to pulling the trigger on a CPO 335d! I'm going to keep my Jetta TDI in addition to a 335d, just as many forum members suggested. If and when I encounter carbon issues, if the car needs an extended stay at the dealership, I'll have my bulletproof Jetta TDI to fall back on. Would you recommend a sport model OR non-sport model? I test drove a non-sport which I liked a lot. I plan to test drive a sport model for comparison. I believe that the sport model has a firmer suspension, bigger tires, more supportive seats, and the 155mph speed limit. I don't necessarily need any of those features and I have no plans of doing anywhere near 155mph! However, I'm thinking that maybe a sport model is more desirable and may perhaps offer more resale value, IMHO.

Sport model is a must, especially if you find one with the bells and whistles you like with CPO.

When I was searching last spring for my 335d using AutoTrader, within a 200 mile radius I'd find ~60 335d cars, usually only 1 or 2 were Sport packs. So Sports are rare. Even more rare is the M Sport 335d. This included more aggressive front facia and rear bumper, M door sills, and some other cosmetic goodies. No performance changes though.

I ended up finding mine over 500 miles away in NC.

Thanks Mark! I'm leaning towards the sport model even though I'm mostly a laid back driver. Every now and then I do like to get into the car performance wise and put my right foot into it!
