I have to agree with the supply and demand statement although somehow people are still getting discounts. I went in last week and worked out numbers and my final price ($45,100) was also their last price at the dealership. They refused to drop even a dollar. I may have to try some dealerships near Miami and such and hope they are cheaper!

After some hardcore negotiations I got 1500 off MSRP on my '07 coupe back when they had zero in stock, but I really had to fight for that and pin two dealerships against each other. Just get the best price from one dealer and then go to the dealer where you actually want to buy the car from and make them beat that price. I basically told them what their invoice was and how much I thought was fair for me to pay for the car. Even with 1500 off they were still making 1500 on the car, and they knew it was fair since I had to wait 3 months for the car to come in. I got my car for 42k with tax out the door (6mt, metallic paint, CA, sport package).

BTW, all of the dealers started with the same BS that they weren't discounting coupes at all. I just told them that other dealers were, and explained that I was a for real buyer and if I wasn't buying the car with them then it would be with someone else. I got in my car to leave and my cell phone rang and my salesman asked me to come back inside and work out a deal. They love to play the game, just have a fair price on a piece of paper and don't budge from it.

I got literally 5 good quotes over edmunds, > 1500 off list, same thing, no coupes in stock at any except demos, usually 1 6-spd and one Step. I used those numbers, and I admit I dropped all their names, and the dealership I bought from matched. They came from the "list price" mentality too. Some dealership is going to be putting your name down on an order with BMW, why not them? I really believe they are all able to sell the vehicle for the same price. That "I can't do that" or "nobody is going to sell you that car for that price" or "do you think I should make any money on this deal," those are all tactics leftover from the 60's when our grandpas were in high school acting out a scene from "Grease."

What is interesting and why I think edmunds is powerful is I never set foot in any of those 5 dealerships where I got the quotes. I did call one on the phone and email another.

Why I think the "willing" part of the willing and able supply-side economics equation is everything is....my hunch is that when the dealership knows you're serious, i.e. ready to sign this instant, and you have done your homework and have other places you can make a deal at, they do want your business.

I dunno, CA sounds like a cartel....if I'm confident every dealership within 50 miles of me is asking list and wont budge, neither will I. If I know every dealership within 50 miles is giving >1500 off when customers ask, so will I. Like cnn money said, there is no reason to go into a dealership personally anymore, except to sign the papers. All the money/$ negotiations can be done on the phone and by email.

I was expecting not to get anything off MSRP, but without even any negotiations about price they dropped $500 off when we talked numbers. I tried to work it down some more but they were firm on that number. I didnt really try any other dealerships so I just stuck with it. I didn't want to go through the hassle.

The best price is usually through the Internet Manager at the dealership (the one you get via Costco or Edmunds). When I bought my E92 the standard policy at the dealership was MSRP when dealing with a CA on the floor but $1000 off through the Internet Manager.

Just ordered a 08 e90 335i JB/Bk Dokota/Alum PP/SP/PDC/CA/Fold down rear seat for $1300 off MSRP. I did my homework on this site for the last 3 weeks. I walked in the dealership, gave them the car I wanted, signed the paper and walked out in about 40 minutes

^^ Where at in Florida?

As for another post, I used Edmunds today and sent out the price to 3 local dealers. They were all a solid 2-3 grand under what I was quoted with the same exact options and everything.

Well, I checked with Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny and they both said that if the person at the the dealership said that....it must be true. I'm still waiting to hear from the Tooth Fairy....

Use the internet. Dealers seem more willing to give deals when the internet is used. Trust me.

I had the best car buying experience by using the internet and sending the exact spec and what I wanted to pay to 5 dealers via e-mail. I listed why I thought the number I arrived at ($1500 over wholesale invoice) was a fair deal. WITHOUT HAGGLING, I got $2750 over invoice, $2000 over invoice, and finally someone matched the $1500 over invoice. These numbers were their first replies to my e-mail. Also, be willing to think "outside the box". A dealership may be a good distance away, but if you save enough money, it may be well worth it.

I received about 2k off from msrp. What I did was go bmwusa and send request to dealers around my house. Wait dealer to email me. Do all the dealing via email. For boston area, i highly recommend Nick from herb chamber.

Here's my advice. Works if you have a lot of dealers in the area.

Do your homework. FInd out all the options you want. Look up the invoice pricing for everything. Figure what you believe is fair for the dealership to make. In my opinion, depending on the car....this one for instance should be around 500 - 600 over invoice.

Next find email address for a sales guy at each dealership in your area. There must be about 10 BMW dealerships in the DC area so there were lots to work with. Tell them that you are interested in XXX car with XXX options. Ask them to quote you a price. DONT give them what you are willing to pay - you just might get a better deal. You can let them know that you are looking at several dealerships in the area and you want the best price and you are finding out who can give it to you. Someone just might be interested in pushing a car for number ratings. Once you have a price you like, send out an email to the other dealerships letting them know you got XXX price quote and you are going to make the deal today unless they can beat it. Then make your purchase. NEVER pay MSRP or anywhere close to MSRP.

From what I can gather on the forum, sounds like the dealerships in CA don't have to offer much discount. Remember from econ 101, a supply or demand is constituted by being willing and able. Cali dealers could give $1700 off easily, but they're not willing. Therefore, no supply at that price.
+1. I got mine from a Northern NJ dealership at $1,000 off MSRP and some extras thrown in for good measure. Definitely had to do a bit of shopping around first. Agree with most here that internet is a great place to start.

Wow, I thought e90's could be had for big discounts. Last I was at my dealership there were many unsold 335 sedans on the lot, nary a coupe. But since I drive my car infrequently, if both coupes and sedans are discounted less than they were in '07, that's good for us '07 owners, maybe we wont lose all of that $9,200 to depreciation as according to edmunds....
