My buddy is leasing and lives a couple hundred miles from the dealer. Can he perform the oil changes / brakes himself and still be able to return the car to the dealer at lease end without issues? Should he save all the reciets to prove he did the proper maintainance??

Regardless of where he lives, can you return a Leased BMW without any problems if you do your own maintainance on it???

This thread really doesn't make sense. If he lives that far from any BMW dealership he must live in the middle of nowhere. Which means his lease must be horrible as far as miles go.

That's great but does this mean if you do your own mainenance, BMW won't take back your lease and you're forced to BUY it???

Hard for me to believe that is what they will do - I am going to do the same as you; change the oil myself, etc. and turn it in at lease end. Just make sure you keep all receipts.

That said, this is my first BMW and I have always used this method for other brands and have never had a problem.

Possibly since they can't prove, when the car is sold CPO, that the car was maintained properly. Can u see a dealer saying, "uh..well the previous owner did his own maintenance take a look at his receipts". LOL

Im in the same position as your buddy!! im about 50 miles from my closest dealer! U just have to wait until the car says it needs service and at that time u call bmw assist to come pick the car up cause you dont feel comfortable driving it that far cause the car says check engine and it says it needs service!! They will send a Tow truck free of charge and come pick up your ride, Know ive never had them tow the car back to me ive always gone down and picked it up myself but im sure you could arrange it!!

I just made a call. The dealer will charge you at the end of the lease if the service required lights are on. So I guess if you want to cover the cost of parts to do the repairs yourself all you have to worry about is checking the car into service before the lease ends to have the last service done and the lights reset so they can't charge you.

Where is he gunna get the OEM parts to do the work? Mail order?

The only issue that may come up is that the Dealer may question why the car has had no service history and not keep it for thier CPO programs. Which may spark some sort of inquiry towards the Leasee

NO. I'm fairly certain that if theres no proof in the dealers system that maintenance was performed, it's has if it never happenned. I do not believe a dealer can legally CPO a car that has not been maintained according to manufacturer spec.

I think they will take it back, but I am sure they are going to charge him for not maintaining the car. Best if he takes it in. Maybe schedule a friday drop off, get loaner and pick up the next week friday evening. My dealer was cool with the loaner and let me keep it from Thurs to Monday for an alarm install and the first recommended maintenance. The good thing about the lease is that hey know he will need another bimmer and want is business.
