all the sensor does it automatically place the AC in recirculate mode versus bringing in fresh outside air, it does this when it detects bad quality air.

there is a flapper vent under the cowling in front of the passenger, on manual recirc mode it stays closed, on auto it opens and closes as needed.

if you sit in the car and manually tell it to recirc or bring in outside air, does the smell come and go?

it is not outside the realm of possibility that the mechanic left a dirty rag under the cowling or something like a mouse crawled in there and died. I would remove the cowling and investigate. sniff the microfilter too, maybe it has a bad odor.

when i set it to manually stay closed all is good.
but im really dumbfounded that when its set to auto it takes in smelly exhaust air from the environment like every 50-60s which wayyy too often

on auto it will open briefly every few minutes to vent in fresh air, time varies based on the outside temp and the interior condensation sensor.
