320d engine whine

Hi there, my 2005 320d has developed a whine from the engine bay. Have not experienced any loss of power (yet, touch wood!). The car has covered only 36,500 miles. Am very aware of the potential turbo issues on these models, and the noise sound similar to the siren that other people have experienced, but it sounds more of a lower pitched whine.
Before I start to panic completely, is there anything else that may cause an engine whine, or is my turbo a lost cause?

Thanks,
Craig.

You should check out my video in the technical section if you want to hear how a turbo sounds when it's on it's way out.

Does it get louder the higher the revs?

Hi Davey,
sounds similar, but not as high pitched.

Don't think it gets louder, just changes in tone.

Hi mate, I had the same issue with my one. It turned out to be the alternator whining.
