Turn off instrument lights at night

Apologies if this is a stupid question, in other vehicles I have owned I was able to completely turn off the instrument lights while highway driving (which I do a lot of), I can only dim it would seem on this car, is there a way to turn them off?

I have a small HUD I use for speed while those lights are off

I don't have an answer regarding your panel light "off" because I just bought my BMW, but my curiosity is peaked about your alternative speed display for the same reasons as your use...... when I drive from Phoenix to LA overnight. Any additional details?

Yeah I bought it on ebay for I think $80, just type in HUD and you will get a couple of pages of things, there are ones with additional RPM, clock etc...just plugs into your OBD port

You cannot completely turn off the instrument cluster backlight. You can only dim it. If you have idrive, you can switch off the nav screen though.
