Same here - except substitute a Berlingo for a Land Rover Defender 110!

I suspect there may be a few more looking at the impending weather.

By the way if anyone knows where there are some winter tyres without being reamed on price please get in touch. Been shopping around for six weeks or so now and no joy apart from some for the other half's civic and that was only for the front!

Cheers

Merv

I hate my winter tyres, it means I can always get into work when it snows. I miss staying at home and twidling my thumbs.....(yeah right, working over VPN)

Cheers Eddie, that is how I came across the brand new michelin alipns for £110 fitted on the other half's car, although they only had two. Currently looking for 225 45 17 for my BM and was thinking of gettng a part worn set if I could get them at the right price and then get some fresh rubber for the back.

One benefit of working from home most of the time is that I am not desperate for them at the moment.

Mine are M&S (mud and snow) tyres.

So ner.

RWD BMW + driving in snow = using a spoon to saw wood. Even if you serrate the edge of the spoon, it still won't work.

I've corrected your equation and added a new one:

RWD BMW + sumer tyres + living in the middle of nowhere + driving in snow = using a spoon to saw wood. Even if you serrate the edge of the spoon (winter tyres), it still won't work

RWD BMW + winter tyres + living somewhere sensible + driving in snow = using a wood saw to saw wood (with a certain degree of smugness carried over)

Surrey isn't proper London or proper Countryside.

So it's not "proper."

Oh and I'm closer to a city than you (albeit a little city)

I guess my angle is that while we have a "proper" snow vehicle, why spend £500+++ on Winter tyres that may only be useful for a few weeks?

Increased insurance, poorer road manners in non snow, etc.

I'd rather not risk our BM - in fact now the snow/ice has gone (not for long) I've been REALLY appreciating driving the Bimmer after a few weeks of Landy only driving.

The Landy is brilliant but it's very slow, very noisy and has the turning circle of an oil tanker. Best in smallish doses.

But the point being, you'd be appreciating the bimmer a lot more between Nov and March with winter tyres on.

My Conti sport 3's are like greased-granite this time of year, best place for them is in the shed.

More so if you live in a very rural area (as from the Landy requirement, you must do) as greasy, near frozen, mud & cow shit covered back lanes are truly lethal in slick summers - even in summer - let alone winter!

Why did you get a Landrover Defender, not a Disco or Toyota or Mitsubishi etc etc 4WD?

Because, apart from the above minor compromises, it's utterly brilliant.

We have the BM so don't need luxurious comfort in a 4x4. Discos weigh 2.8 tonnes and I don't like them much, Toyota's LC is too big and a bit pikey, even more so with the RAV4 and Mitsubishi 4x4s are quite simply cr4p.

Defenders get under your skin; they make you smile, they go literally anywhere, they have hose down interiors, pedals designed for wellies and get more positive comments than anything I've ever driven. Plus I would not have got out of an icy field in anything else two weeks ago.

We have two completely "opposite" vehicles that between them cover pretty much all bases. Soft-roaders are for those that want to pose or can only have one vehicle.

I personally didn't pay premium price for the 'ultimate driving machine' to have it sat in the garage when a little bit of the white stuff falls on our lands..Winter tyres + rear wheel drive = loads of fun...pass it on.
