Im just saying thats what happened to mine maybe its the drop in voltage it detected because i unplugged the connector if you just crimp the pipe that might work better its not detecting a broken connection then ?

It will throw a shadow code to BMW when they hook your car up. Thats a no go for them. You can just look for the small vacuum cord that plugs into the muffler. Look under the drivers side rear wheel. Pull it some so there is a bunch of slack. Fold it in half, and zip tie it. Your hands will get a little dirty, but it takes 2 minutes. Plus if your car is still under BMW warranty all you have to do is cut the zip tie before you go in, and no one will know.

I just did the same mod this past weekend by using a 7/32" ball bearing to plug the vacuum hose. Love the sound now!! I do a lot of hwy driving and at around 75mph, you can hear the exhaust purring in the background. Turn the music up slightly louder and you won't even hear it. On the outside though, it's actually pretty audible IMO. =D

What happens with aftermarket exhaust? Are you effectively throwing a code every time as well?

I took my car in several times with it unplugged and never had an issue. I can't see how it would be an issue. The 335 performance exhaust doesn't have the valve. I would rather have it not functioning like this mod does than have it plugged and zip tie the line.

I unplugged the cable for my '08 e92 and havent experience any major related problems and stealership hasnt said anything to me after many services. love the sound, and cant stand the oem setting since it sounds like a car with silencer on.

The only affect that i notice might be a problem is that the flap inside the exhaust might be sticky now since its been on the open position for 3 years. When I take my car in for service, I would plug the cable back in, and will hear the flip closing/opening during startup and its a pretty loud metal *clink* sound. differently louder then when it was new, and clean pipe. my guess, the flap has built up crap in there and causing it to make a louder then normal clink sound when running. either way, once i am done at service, i unplug it back once i drive out the stealership. been debuting if i should bring up the clink sound before my warrenty expires in 6months and get them to replace the flap..............

Those that say they got a code from it, have you verified what the code was & that it was due to disconnecting this line?

I don't see how it'd toss a code when none of the aftermarfket exhausts have it.

DONE!

(second post...) First "mod" done after tinting the windows...took about 10 seconds start to finish, and it's definitely noticeable on start-up.

That should hold me over until I get a full exhaust on!

Thanks for the DIY-write up.

Just did this mod. I can tell the car sounds a noticeable deal better at cold start. I haven't driven around with it unplugged yet. There is more of a smoothness and louder sound at start. When plugged in I almost here this slight metallic rattle I guess it's the valve opening and closing or whatever. Not sure I will leave it unplugged I plan to get an aftermarket exhaust next month so we'll see. I did notice more gaeous fumes (emissions) after revving a little with the thing unplugged.

i see a lot of people say no consiquences but this will void your warrenty if the dealer wants to be a dick about it. i just had a convo with one of the bmw techs and basicly he told me it wasn't the best idea to do this mod for all the reasons that have been stated already. idk i'm going to plug mine back in and wait to get an aftermarket exhaust or at least untill i'm out of warranty

would a CANTool be able to detect and clear the shadow code if it were to be logged in the ecu?

Unplugged mine this morning. Nice sound at initial start up, but the change is very subtle otherwise. I wonder if the subtlety is attributed to the sedan and/or xi setup. I believe the the pipe is routed different around the AWD. My friend has the e92 and it sounds much throatier in all situations. Does anyone else with an e90 xi feel the change is very minimal?

E90 has a resonator in the exhaust, where the E92 only has an X-pipe.

This mod will not cause a service / check engine light, but it will cause your computer to show OBD II codes p2401 p2419. It doesn't seem to negatively affect performance. However, I would be sure to plug the connector back in before any dealer service trips.
