I called Valentine today; they said no, both the V1 visual display AND the Concealed Display cannot be on at the same time...how stupid, imho. Even the guy I spoke at Valentine said he thought that was a good idea and he would pass it on to the engineers -- yeah, whatever...don't you think they should've thought of that before. Anyway, I returned the Concealed Display today to get my money back on it. So, far, the V1 works well, but I hate how you can't turn off X-band entirely...this thing is so friggin sensitive; it picks up every automatic store door, etc. even on "L" mode.

You CAN turn off X-band entirely. Read the manual, or find the instructions online. When you turn on the unit, you have to press & hold the "mute" knob, and it enters the programming mode. Then you can adjust all kinds of settings. I disabled the X-band on mine and it's great!

Hmmmm....the manual didn't mention that (the manual is kind of vague and doesn't say much in regards to custom settings). It just mentions how to change modes by holding and releasing the mute button, but doesn't say anything about turning off X band entirely; I currently have it in "L" mode (Advanced Logic), but that still picks up X band (if the computer thinks it's legit)...but NO police use X band any more in my area. I will try this though. Thank you.

I have the main unit up by the mirror (right side so it more hidden).. You can see my CD in the picture.. I have it held on by a pice of double stick something that came with my XM radio install. Its very easy to see and especially at night, I usually run my V1 silent and rely on just the visual warnings. Best of all people cant see it from the outside unless they are looking in at the right angle, also passengers dont notice it unless its night and they are in the back.. Its funny to have them asking "why are you slowing down" and I tell them "cop up ahead or behind me just wait".

btw -- must this all be so friggin complicated? Damn Mike Valentine...I guess he knows how to build a highly sensitive radar detector, but he knows NOTHING about user intuitiveness and control!!!!

What do you all think about this way?

Here's my post in another forum:

MY POST

Can anyone tell me if it would be doable on the 335i? Can someone pls. snap some pics of the area above the steering column from the passenger viewpoint (side shot) and one of the instrument cluster?

Thanks!

If you have a way of tting the concealed display to fit into a plastic case like that, then yea, it wll work. Some users place it on the side of the instrument cluster, by the oil temp. gauge on the 335i...if you search it up, you will find a BUNCH of ideas.

Wow those thin concealed displays give me an idea... Has anyone here ever mounted one on the dash with sticky tape (or would that mess up the dash)?

I attached a quick&dirty photoshop...

Post # 70 in this topic... just scroll up.. I use a pice of double stick tape on the dash to hold mine in place.. Just use a little bit of rubbing alch to clean off the tape residue when you sell or trade in the car.

I saw yours, Andrew, and then when i saw the slim display it gave me the idea for putting it a little lower is all...

Slim with no color change is $80 shipped. If we can round up 5 guys from this board, REBinc will do it for $70 for us. If you wnan to start a list in this thread, I'd be happy to coordinate the whole thing with him.

two ways I can see to conceal the wire as much as possible. Have it come out the back and drill a hole in the dash where the concealed display will go or if you on't want to put a hole in your dash, have the wire come ou the bottom of the concealed display and have it go right into the seam between the dash and the wood trim piece (just above the vent).

I think there are a lot of options to hide the wire with a slim display, especially with the jack delete. To make things even better, I asked him about the textured finish on the slim display. He said he has some 600 grit sand paper for a different project that he'll try and use to perfect the finish. To me, that would be the icing on the cake. I would not hesitate to order one. I'll probably get on either way but that would vertainly seal the deal for me.

I did photoshop that, but I was thinking that with a thin display, and the jack delete coming out the bottom, you'd run it along the trim to the pillar, then up along the airbag (tucked in) to the top of the windshield and across to the V1, assuming it is by the rearview mirror.
