Gas question???
I was just wondering how much gas do you keept in the tank. Me, i fill up every time i get to half full, so half full or half a tank to me is empty. I can count on 1 hand the number of times that i have went past half and even less times that i have went past a quarter tank. So i just wanted to know what every ones was driving around with in their gas tank.
Jason, my reasoning is that if I want to go some where I do not want to have to stop and get gas first to get their. And it is better for your gas pump, having to suck in all of the junk that lies at the bottom of your gas tank, that can clog up your filters and what not. Just MHO. Or if I am late for a tee time, like many of my friends, I don't want to have to go get gas first and miss my tee time Sorry guys but I only put fuel in my tank 2X a month and my count shows that i have driven avg 235 miles each time. ? For those of you who run it to empty or until the light comes on, how many time a month do u go to the gas station? so tell me why if you go to any repair shop that has take off a fuel tank they will tell you about all the grit and junk found in the tank? 99% of the repair place will tell you this! So if their is nothing no junk in the gas tank tell me why do we have to have a fuel filter why not just run gas straight to the engine? http://www.ehow.com/how_7715273_remo...-gas-tank.html http://www.tankonempty.com/viewstory/71 Last edited by OaklandR; 12-24-2012 at 03:47 PM.. |

I set a record today, got the mileage down to 10kms before filling it up. Was literally running on fumes.

So in order to save time and not have to fill up, you're spending more time to fill up more often? And the fuel pump sucks from the bottom of the tank no matter what.
I fill up after the first fuel reserve warning comes on. Sometimes not until the static warning where it says you have xx miles till empty.

You know that extra quarter tank is less than 30lbs right?

I have sweated a few times if I would make it to the next gas station, at speeds over 100 mph the fuel goes very quickly when it gets down to where the light comes on, so my tank must be clean! I haven't had any trouble! |

I don't understand this mentality of filling your tank once it reaches half empty. Do you realize how irritating and ridiculous it would be to have a car with an 8-gallon fuel tank? That is basically what you are creating. Getting gas is not enjoyable, why would I want to do it twice as often?
I wish my car had a 20-gallon tank so I would only have to fuel up 3 times a month. |

I fill up every Thursday unless I know I can make it to the next Thursday. Shell is 5 cents off on Thursday, so I hit it on my way home. Although I won't go out of my way to get it in Thursday because when its all said and done, saving $1 is really not worth the hassle.

Saving 30 pounds is the diff between having a fat girl and a skinny girl in the passenger seat.

For navy ships (not so much aircraft), they never drop below 50%. (For aircraft we drain the tanks for safety reasons) Two is one, one is none. Half tank is our empty. It provides emergency reserves and prevents the deposits at the bottom of the tanks from entering the engines.
So I do the same exact procedure with my BMW. |

I fill up when my miles to empty is around 50 miles (so right before the light comes on). Then again I do mostly city driving and I am modded so I get around 220 miles per tank 50 miles til empty is around 1/4 tank for me, haha.

The other part of that reasoning is condensation.
The more air in the tank the more surface area and air for water to condense on out of the atmosphere. I fill mine at half unless I am on a highway trip.
Also its psychologically hurts less to put a half a tank in than a full tank when you look at the cost though logically not any different. |
