X1 2.0d as courtesy car!
I read the thread someone created about getting a new X1 a few days ago, and didn't think much of it at the time.
However, on the way home that evening the Cooper S started bellowing black smoke and juddering, finally breaking down at the roadside. Fast forward several hours and I'm in a brand new X1 2.0D Msport as a courtesy car. I have to say, I'm truly impressed by it. My previous car was an E92, and I've never been sure of the X1's at all. I have to say it's left me very surprised. The cabin is large and spacious, which is a must when your 6'3 and the driving position is brilliant. The automatic gearbox is flawless and despite it being a pretty big car compared to my Cooper, it doesn't feel like it when driving. I've missed the heated seats, automatic wipers and lights, and just the way a BMW drives. I have to say, it's rekindled my desire for another BMW. The Mini residual values are struggling, and I've had enough of the poor build quality that Mini seems to suffer from. Seriously tempted to look into VT'ing the Cooper S and getting myself back into a BMW! Given the problems I've had with the Mini, I'd be willing to pay to get out of it! |

Mini problems! Jees, you don't have much luck with cars do you, wasn't your e92 a dog?
I've never been in one but I have to admit I do like the look of the X1. It's less awkward than the X3 and less drug dealer than the X5. |

The Mini isn't that bad by any means, because it's just down to poor build quality. It's just frustrating. Buying what I feel is an expensive hatch brand new to find it constantly rattles or has odd noises when driving, judders and smokes on occasion is just frustrating. It got to the point where I stopped driving it to prove it wasn't me who was the source of the problem! The X1 has me wanting another BMW. I think I'd enjoy the X1, and I also love the X5. I've been looking this morning for current stock of both in the area |

I have the auto at the moment, and find it fantastic. Didn't expect the car to be as good as it is. Would be very tempted to take the one I have at the moment providing I could get a half decent deal on it!

There is a massive difference between an X1 and an X5 in every way. New model X3 is a decent compromise and a much superior car to an X1.

The new X3 is significantly more expensive, however a quick look seems to show that it's a great mix of the X1 and X5. None at my local dealer that I can look at tonight, but certainly worth considering going forward. The thing with BMW I don't look forward to is that they have so many finance plans I get confused as to which would be best for me! |

I know what you're saying but I think it's very much down to spec and colour. Get the right wheels for instance and I think it looks well. Get it wrong and it looks a like shoe.
And I notice they're offering it in a new trim (xLine) and new engine (25d) |

I can only really remember seeing 1 X1 that I thought was ugly and that was a white one. I am pretty anti white cars though. There are 2 black ones on my street and both look great.
Masterplan. I think it's safe to say the issues with the Mini are not down to you. I've got a friend who owns an indie and he says they all rattle and have the same mechanical issues due to so many crappy Citroen/Peugeot parts in them. He still buys/takes them on trade though as he claims he could sell one to every girl that walks onto the forecourt. |

The X-Line is the titanium looking trim pieces.... And definitely more room than the E91... |

The X1 all goes wrong at the front end for me. And now the X3 is almost the size of the X5 would be a contender if I were looking for a SUV.
I know what you mean about the Mini though Masterplan. My Missus ditched hers after only owning it for a couple of months. At one point it had nine rattles. I managed to fix seven of them before she sold it |

Sad day, I had to give the X1 back. I have to say, I didn't find one fault with the X1 at all. I feel I really put it through its paces too. Done everything I would do with the mini, both commuting and weekend type activities. It's cabin space and smooth drive were huge pluses, and I have to say....I'm in love with automatics now. That was the first automatic car I've ever driven, and after a few hairy moments thinking the brake was the clutch....it made every day mundane driving that little bit more bearable.
I had a look round the forecourt last night, and they had a large selection of X1 and X5, but no newer X3's. The chap at the service desk said that the new ones are pretty rare at that dealership, but if one came in he would get a salesman to call me for a test drive. From what I've read above, the Mini woes seem to affect many owners. The annoying thing is that the car is a blast to drive, yet is let down by corner cutting and poor build quality. Plus its the perfect compromise between sporty hatch for me and a girly car for the mrs. If it wasn't for the fact I am on a PCP deal and only 20 months in to a 48 month plan, I would trade the mini in this weekend. I would probably have the fork out the difference now to VT the contract and that's not going to fly with the mrs right now. My only chance might be to convince her we need two cars, and that the mini can be hers. Wish me luck! |

If you are already 20 months in I reckon you will have more than enough equity in the Mini to clear the fiance and get at least a 5% deposit down.
BMW will want to do a deal in August, I promise you. |

gIzze, I'm not sure if I would. Is it not usually by the 36th month that the balance tips towards equity? Also, why will they want a deal in August? |

I would be very surprised.
call them now and ask for a settlement figure. Or PM me your purchase price, deposit, monthlies and GFV and I will tell you roughly what you should owe. Probably quicker to just call, they will tell you in 30 seconds. Because everyone wants to register their new car in September so August is generally a dead month, so they want to do as much used business as possible. |

Used new model X3 carry a bit of a premium and therefore don't make as much sense, you can get perhaps a year older X5 for similar cash which to me is a much better buy. Possibly decent PCP deals however on new X3 due to having pretty decent projected residuals.
If you a Mini man what about the Countryman , they aren't half big, not to everyone's taste but then neither is the X1. |

Phoned up the finance company and got the settlement. It's not too bad, but I suspect I'd need to really push to get them to clear the finance on it.
Would waiting until August or later in the year be more beneficial to me? Or is it best to start looking now and seeing what's out there? |
