I have just come across all the posts etc on the issue with the mv4 alloys cracking. I have a few cars to view and all of them have the mv4 19" alloys. I'm looking for any pointers on things to look out for ? obviously i can't remove all 4 wheels when viewing a car to check for cracks but is there any tell tale signs to look out for ? and also can a cracked alloy still hold air or will it always have a slow puncture if cracked and is a cracked alloy enough reason to walk away from a car or will a decent weld see it right ?

I see lots of people are going down the aftermaket route but i would want to avoid this as much as possible as i thing the mv4 suit the e92 best.

pretty sure all cars i will be viewing no longer have run flats as i know that can add to the problem with cracks..

Lie on the floor with a torch and ask them to slowly move forward. Ideally with a wet cloth to wipe the wheel and if in doubt check with your finger to see if there is a crack

I wouldn't lie on the floor and trust anyone to move slowly lol

Easiest way to check is take it to a place with a ramp, lift it up and have a look underneath it, might cost you 10 or 20 quid but at least you won't get run over doing it haha

youl be hard pressed to diagnose any or most cracks while the car is on the floor especially if its quite dirty on the inside of the wheel. its a used alloy wheel weather its a year old or 10 the chances of it being slightly cracked , buckled or bent lips are almost garaunteed

That's what I was thinking that they are to be expected on these wheels, every set I have saw for sale has welds.

but is it a deal breaker or is a weld a viable solution ?

As long as the cracks arent too bad or too many. Guess you could haggle if you do find some too.

don't care what anyone says i would not drive a car with a cracked wheel full stop!!!

If you are buying a car with a crack in one or all wheels, haggle a chunk of the price to afford a wheel change, or walk!

That's my opinion and despite what anyone says i would NEVER alter that fact!

I would change the wheels regardless. And the tyres! ..knock the price down and change them asap! . Damn bmw's

i have read that BMW will replace cracked wheels if they pass a runout test is this true ? and if so would they do this with a car out of warranty ?

They could just drop offering such large rims for countries with poor roads.

We are stacking the odds against us, whether BMW could offer a better quality product (at a cost), or not.
