Talking Spec Dock: Install (56k Warning!)

So I got the dock this morning and I started the install Immediately. Took around 2 hours.
DOCK cost around 150$ from Spec.
Contact matt@2point5.com for order info

HERE THE LINK:http://stores.homestead.com/2point5/...POD/Detail.bok

Tools Needed:
-T-20 Torx
-electrical tape
-Dremmel with cutting bit

So first of all the spec dock comes with the ashtray replacement Dock which is connected to a power wire(with a fuse), a ground wire, and three component cables (red, white and yellow). Here is a picture of the dock after I connected it to the cigarette lighter (i forgot to take a picture before i started bec i was excited to get it done )

So i started by taking off the center console trim piece. You start by lifting the shift boot and then pulling firmly in front of the iDrive knob.

Disconnect the iDrive knob by unplugging the connector and then lastly disconnect the cigarette lighter by unplugging that as well.

That should release the center trim and allow you to move it and work on it elsewhere. Detach the ashtray and cigarette lighter compartment by unscrewing the four T-20 Torque screw.

Next, take out the ashtray and use your Dremmel or Drill to make a hole big enough to fit the cables through it.

The Dock has double sided tape on it to stick it to the bottom of the ashtray compartment when youre done pulling the wires through. The dock will snap into place when you put it in the right spot.

Now to supply the power to charge your iPod or iPhone you need to splice into the Power and ground wire that gives the cigarette lighter its power. Obviously sodering the wires together would be the best option but I dont have a lot of experience with that so I spliced into the wires and then electric taped them to hold em. You need to splice into the THICK power and ground wire in order for it to supply enough power.

SPEC DOCK POWER (RED) Connects to RED AND BLACK THICK WIRE
GROUND (BLACK) connect to BROWN THICK WIRE (cut off the circle connector off spec ground)

Now screw in the ashtray assembly, with the newly installed spec dock in it, to the trim piece you took it off of. Bring it back to the car and run the wires around the Shifter to the armrest. I lifted up the rubber tray in the armrest and found some space to run the RCA wires. I dremmeled a little bit off under that rubber tray so that I could have the wires go all the way to the back corner. LOOK at the pictures and it will make sense. The whole that you make under the Tray doesnt really matter because you will be putting the rubber tray back on top of it. I then made a hole Just big enough to fit the AUX cable through it and connect to the AUX port. The "Y" cable connects under the tray as seen.

There is actually a CLEANER way to attach your y cable to the Aux port. You can ago underneath the AUX port and splice into the wires which will allow you to still have functionality of the AUX port from on top as long as the ipod isnt playing!

HERE IS WHERE I CUT A LITTLE TO BE ABLE TO BRING THE CABLE TO THE BOTTOM CORNER

I finally pushed the trim back into place and had to wiggle some stuff around to make it all fit nicely underneath. I turned the Car on and VIOALA! IT WORKS! the dock LOOKS AWESOME, charges my phone, Plays the music through my AUX port and let me CONTROL the volume through the steering wheel

FINAL PRODUCT:

Let me know if you have any questions.

OH AND I ALSO got a new performance shift knob and boot that i put in today as well. IDK if you noticed the change or not

it's surprisingly really clear. i turned up a bunch of songs and none of them got fuzzy. i recommend putting your iPhone/iPod EQ settings to "electronic."

Great idea.. I didn't even know this kit was out there.. so before I go and get it, here's a good question.. what happens to the phone when you plant your right foot in...say.. 1st, 2nd or even 3rd gear?

I was wondering this same thing. Also, do they make it for other cars?

Either way it looks really nice and clean.

Looks awesome! My questions is why this, over the ipod kit from BMW (as well as mayhbe a custom dock like that)? I just picked up a 335i and i think the music from the aux sounds terrible compared to radio stuff.. I have a nice cable its not a cheap one. Volume on the ipod is at like 60%.

Hey man,
I know exactly what your talking about. When i first picked up my car 3 weeks ago i tried it with a monster Aux cable and it sounded really fuzzy and horrible. For some reason this doesnt.. I can turn it up pretty much as loud as I would want to and it sounds great. It also depends on the song you're playing. Downloaded songs usually tend to sound really bad compared to CD ripped songs.. The Aux cable on this dock passes through this box where I guess they put the chip or w.e that allows you to control the volume from the steering wheel and makes it sound more clear

I've tried contacting them about shipping to the UK without any help, does anyone know of anywhere else that I could get this?
