$400 for DP install on XI

A shop up here quoted me $400 to do a DP install on my 335xi, does that seem about right? Thinking Ill pick up some VRSF DPs and bring them to him.

seems a bit high.....maybe because it's so freaking cold there the shop charges extra for heating during the install

on a serious note I got mine done by a local tech for $200

Yea but Xi is harder... I would expect to pay more then non AWD guys. A true going rate for non xi is $250-350.

Haha, plus I have to drive an hour out of town to get to his shop! The shop rates are a bit higher than the lower 48, its usually around $100 an hour here. He actually owns a modded 335xi and that gives me a little more confidence in his work. Plus he will own the only AWD dyno in the state in the next month or so.

There isnt many modded 335s but there is a decent bit of stock bimmers rolling around. Anchorage is pretty mild compared to the rest of the state, I was working in Barrow one week last winter where it was -70 with windchill.

Seems worth it when you factor in the experience. I was quoted $300 for my non-XI install... so i bought a floor-jack and jackstands for $200

I'm with you lol...hate the cold!

OP, talk him down a bit. $400 does seem a bit high even though your xi. Hell, maybe you can get him down to $350

We charge $350 flat rate to install XIs. $400 is perfectly fair. It is not an easy job.

The subframe needs to be dropped. This had to be done to have my downpipes put on my xi last year. The reputable shop could not do it without dropping the subframe. $400 is just a little bit more than what I paid. Given the circumstances it seems fair, just get them on and enjoy them! You'll love them.

I've heard all sorts of numbers when it comes to this topic.. At speed motorsports quoted me about $600 lol. others have said about $350..
I ended up getting my ar XI downpipes on, XI KW coilovers, and my 5"ets fmic all installed at once on at my buddys shop for $500 all said and done

If anyone is looking for a good shop in baltimore that does modding for great prices- I can help you out

I was originally quoted $800 to install dp's and a fmic from a shop... I went to another and paid $750 for dp's, 7" fmic, brake rotors, brake pads, ss brake lines, and brake fluid. I think $400 is definitely a fair price.

You could save money if you DIY. It is not hard at all to DIY. Did all my FBOs myself and I saved a bit for more upgrades. And mind you I'm not a mechanic but just do some reading and study what im doing then I get on it...

Doing downpipes on xi's SUCK. $400 isn't a bad price at all. Turbos on an Xi, forget about it, that is a two day job.

The differences between a RWD and an AWD car render this advice inapplicable.

I just installed the vrsf xi downpipes. It took 3 hours for the shop to put them in.

Exactly what Nailer said. While this might be good advice and true for the rwd, awd is pretty tough to diy downpipes. You have to drop the subframe...

As somebody who lives just up the road from you (350 miles), I think the price is fair. But keep in mind you can do this yourself. I installed DPs on my 335xi. It's a challenging job, but you will learn a lot doing so, and will make you more comfortable tackling other jobs like cleaning your intake valves.

You can find tips for installing DPs on an xi here:

http://http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=425486&page=2

It will probably take you about 5 hours the first time. Easier if you can find a buddy to help out. I'd be happy to answer questions about the install if you try and do it yourself.

I rented a stall (and access to any tools I needed above what I brought) at an indy for $100/day. It was a PIA for the install, but honestly there was nothing that required much creativity, assuming the subframe is dropped and you remove the pass. side motormount. Took me 6 hours lift to drive w/lunch break and dp fix install.

Yes I'd say you guys are right about the differences but if you didn't see that I study what needs to be done first then I do it. Oh and I helped my buddy put his DP's on his XI so thanks!!
