Nigeia Ebay Scam!

HAVE I BEEN NIGERIAN SCAMMED!?!?!?!

ebay message from buyer who won the auction:

Hello there i am luky to be the winner of ur item.i will like this item to be send to my partner for his son coming birthday in Nigeria where they are living presently,i would have prefer sending it to me but am also not in state that is reason why.i shall pay u via paypal and i promise to add US $100 for the shippment and also i will like it to be shpped by EMS courier service cos they are faster and reliable.here is his address Name--- Mr Ade David
Home Address----- #8 Tomori Avenue Elewura Challenge,
Ibadan.
State -------Oyo state
counrty---------Nigeria and the zip code i guess is 23402.I hope u will do me the favour and i shall wait to hear from u soon.Thanks and God bless.

Always state that the winning bidder must reside in the US and if they don't then you go to the next highest bidder or you can restart the auction.

How is he paying?

In any event, it is a scam. The word 'item' is a giveaway. They probably send out loads of these emails so 'item' covers anything with one form letter.

Sorry I only ship to the states to a CONFIRMED PAYPAL addy!!!

YES it matters dont accept paymnet. cuase in a week hell say he never got the item and u shipped it and he gets his money back!!!

YEa and if you get an e-mail from paypal saying funds recieved always check your account!!!! Because usualy they will send fake paypal emails too...and yea dont ship it just file a non bidding buyer claim and say that you dont ship to his country when the drop down menu pops up

Just curious, but how come those scams are always only in Nigeria and no where else in the world? And is it even Nigerians that originate the scams?

I got the same scam email several times and i played along with them.. They sent me a check from "commerce savings bank".. printed from a computer.. looks pretty real.
It was on the news few months ago... that the check looks so real, even banks can't detected. Untill a month later when the federal reserve bank rejects the check, by that time your bank had already cleared the funds for you. Then your bank will charge you a fee for depositing fake check. I'll scan a copy of the check so you guys can see what it looks like.

Just a heads up, I've tried to sell iPods on ebay and had similar things happen. They will send you a fake paypal confirmation email, which more often than not leads to a phishing scam (their goal is to get you to enter your email and paypal password into a fake paypal site). Given this is most likely a scam, if you recieve any such emails, don't use the embedded links. Open a new browser, go to paypal.com, and log in the normal way to confirm the transfer is fake. Once you confirm its a scam, file an ebay dispute and they will return your listing fees (Or at least allow you to relist for free)

There was a great anti-scam a few years ago with the fake Apple laptop sent to the UK...that was a hilarious read!

I sell a fair amount on Ebay and I get a lot of strange emails. I get ones from foreign countries asking questions or saying they won items I'm not even selling. When I sell on Ebay I do so in the US only and they must pay with Pay Pal and I ship to confirmed addresses only.
