Poor fuel economy...323i

I recently picked up a 2011 323i and very happy with the car. The problem I found was it's getting g about 14 ltrs per 100kms sometimes worse. I had to bring my car back where I bought it from for a different reason and was lent the exact same year and model 323i. And it seemed to be better on fuel and more responsive and was getting 9.5 to 10 ltrs per 100kms. I wonder if there anyone would know what might be the problem. I scanned the car and there was no codes...thanks and great forum.

First thing I would do is check the air filter and spark plugs.

Did you reset the computer on both your car and the loaner? The number on the loaner could have been driven more conservatively by the person before you got it.

I will give it look over this weekend. Thanks for the quick responses. I used the app from my Android to read the codes but didn't throw any codes. I also didn't reset the computer on mine, do i just unplug the battery for the reset? I only reset the transmission with the gas peddle. It has 84000 km on the car. And it's not an x drive...thanks for the ideas..

What is your mix of driving in terms of city/hwy? I have the same car as you with approx 65k km and I can tell you that mileage will vary greatly depending on how much time you spend in the city. The I6 engine in these cars (both 2.5L and 3.0L versions) are absolutely terrible in city/bumper-to-bumper traffic driving.

Here's a couple of points of reference: (I keep a spreadsheet of mileage for each tank)
- for city driving (worst case scenario, bumper to bumper traffic on DVP, 401, and Gardiner + downtown TO) I see about 13-15 L/100 km (avg speed for a tank around 20-40 km/h)
- for hwy cruising at moderate speeds (~109-115 km/h) with light traffic I will see approx 7.0-8.5 L/100 km (as low as 6.8 L/100km on one road trip to Ottawa with a tailwind)

I would suggest doing a test: in light traffic on the QEW or 401, get up to speed and set your cruise at something like 110 km/h and then reset your mileage. It should settle around 7.0 - 8.5 L/100km over a period of a few km. If you see much higher than this (say 10 L/100km) then you know you may have a problem.

I see similar efficiency as this also on my 2007 323i (pretty sure no change in motor).
This approach to troubleshooting is indeed a good one.
