How does an oil catch can work and why is it beneficial?

This question comes up very often so we decided to write up an article that hopefully answers every question regarding catch cans and why they are beneficial.

We tried to write it as simple as possible so anyone can understand it.

https://www.redline-motorworks.com/kb_results.asp?ID=8

If you feel we have missed something or if you have any questions, please post them in this thread and they will be addressed!

Thanks guys!

My BSH can has probably caught 1-3 ounces of oil after about 3000 miles of driving. Doesn't sound like much, but it definitely adds up when you start putting the miles on.

Not sure if you were saying you were having someone else do it, but it is definitely an easy DIY. I wouldn't waste the money having someone else do it.

Where do I get one of these? How much do they run? How hard are they to install?

Just curious... if there is a significant benefit to having an oil catch can, are there any auto mfgs who have these as OEM items in their vehicles? If not, why not? I would assume cars like the Bugatti Veyron, where cost is not a concern, would incorporate stuff like this into their expensive 16 cylinder quad turbo motors.

Are there any downsides to installing oil catch cans?

Thanks.

In the article, it mentions why these aren't offered as an OEM part. There are no downsides except for the fact that you have to check it every now and then and empty the contents.

Another question that arises is why isn't a catch can included from the factory? Well it's pretty simple actually. Most people don't even change their oil (scary but true) so will they think to empty the catch can regularly? The answer is obviously and unfortunately, no.

Thanks. I thought it may be maintenance related. That said, I still wonder why higher end mfgs like Ferrari, Aston Martin, etc. wouldn't incorporate them into their vehicles. No one in their right mind would ignore maintenance requirements on $200K+ cars. Plus 99.9% of their customers probably have their cars professionally serviced anyway and emptying the catch can would be very basic to add to the service regimen.

Not being argumentative, just curious. Appreciate the info.

Why is everyone making catch cans?!?! Is there anyone out there making a true recirculation can for our cars? Why make an inferior product that makes us check it all the time when the recirc cans do it for you?

When you mentioned recirculation, were you talking about return oil back into the motor and capping a breather filter on the intake side? I was thinking about just capping the engine head PCV and installing a K&N breather filter on the intake side before installing the catch can.

I thought I read several seasoned N54 owners getting rid of their catch cans because they caused more oil consumption? The only one I've seen recommended is BMS. But a properly functioning PCV system is step 1.
