The not so fun parts of the N54

Hating my car at the moment... Last night having some fun whipping around and get a SES light. Go home and check codes and this is what I get:

The cat codes i'm not worried about since that's just the downpipes but the misfires are extremely annoying. Last summer I replaced cylinder 3 injector and then a few weeks ago cylinder 5. Spark plugs were replaced at 48k miles and i'm at 56k now so can't be that. Anyways so then I clear them and install ISO today. Go grab E85 and first pull I hear a loud pop like a backfire, flashing SES light and low power mode boosting 5 PSI for around 2 minutes. After that back to normal. Get home and pull the codes and get this:

Idk what it is but as of now i'm just pretty annoyed. In my year of owning the car I don't think i've had it running 100% ever. I'm going to do a walnut blasting ASAP then after that see if the misfires are still occuring. If I get the multiple cylinder misfire after walnut blasting i'm just going to swap all coils and spark plugs since its relatively expensive. I just would really hate to have to replace more injectors since they are not cheap. Anyways just had to vent and let some anger out

Wouldn't it be best to just replace the coils first? Does carbon in the intake cause those codes?

One of my friends who knows has a FBO meth 335i and knows a good amount about N54 thinks its carbon. I'm going to trust him and give that a try and if it doesn't run well i'll move to coils and plugs.

I have had this intermittent cylinder 4-5-6 misfires forever. I have changed all my injectoes, both o2 sensors all my coilpacks and plugs. AND I still got them, so I inquired with my tech at FFTEC and he suggested checking the harness for my Procede. So I pulled out the patch that intercepts the fueling and o2's and disconnected and reconnected firmly and I haven't had the issues since. This actually makes senses because everytime I uninstalled my tune and re-installed it, it worked great for a few thousand miles, than all of sudden it would happen again.

I would check the patch that on the JB4 that intercepts the o2 ad fueling and maybe bend the pins a bit to get a better connection.

See if that helps and it doesn't cost anything.

ALSO I have had my cylinders cleaned out about 4k miles ago.

Thanks for your feedback dude (albeit im running a procede) I'm having almost the exact codes as the OP atm (cyl 4,5,6 misfires fuel plausabilty lambda sensor pre cat bank 2 etc) and my plugs are 8 months old and fuel pump is fine but I do have some new coils on the way!

I would have suggested you go buy an extended warranty and a 1000 miles later bring it in for misfires.. but then you're FBO so I'm not sure it's a good idea

I'm gonna send this to Terry and ask where the pins are then give it a try. Thanks for your help

change pulgs, then coils, then injectors, cleaning intake valves might be a good idea.

I'm doing valves first then i'll be following that order. Although I have been pretty unlucky with the car it's still not as bad as your luck so I shouldn't be complaining. hahaha

I also replaced my pre cat O2 sensors at 56k miles due to aging. They still work, but age slows them and causes them to read different from their original calibration.

Also, remember you should really replace these in pairs, as a brand new O2 will respond faster than one with 50k+ miles on it. You want them aging together. This caused fueling issues in my car.

sucks man, best of luck, I've gone through my share of issues with my car (vanos to DME transistors). Still love the thing though.

BTW you should take your iphone in for a replacement, you got the camera lense dust issue going on (purple flecks in pictures).

Hahaha i'm already ahead of you got back from apple 2 hours ago. Noticed that last night and went to the Genius Bar today. I'm now on my 3rd iphone 5 and both the first two were replaced for the dust issue.

Anyways thanks everyone for your help so far. Here's a quick update:

After the suggestion to check the pins I pulled all the connections a part and checked them then blew to get rid of any dust. Terry also suggested putting the small black connector back to stock so I did that and it ran no better. I did some logs for Terry and just sent them to him including one log while the car misfired. 3rd gear pull and started shaking then SES light. More fun codes. I think i'm at one set of misfire codes a day right now

I've had the same car as yours, a 2009xi and my injectors failed at about 74000kms.

First on bank one, misfires on cold start, went away when heated up, but after some more starts it didn't go away anymore.
Codes on several cylinders, also for HPFP.
Then it didn't even start anymore, the engine shakes and I got blue smoke from the exhaust.
I really thought there was a serious engine damage when I saw the smoke.

It was towed to the dealer, they updated the software, changed the HPFP and 3 injectors on bank 1. All was done at the goodwill of BMW.

Fine for 2 weeks but failed again the same way.
This time they changed the 3 other injectors and the car ran much smoother and took a little less fuel.

That's how it happened to me.

I think you should change them all now as they will eventually fail in the next time.

When they fail and stay stuck open it could seriously damage the engine while hydrolocking.
There is perhaps nothing that breaks, but extreme pressures could damage the piston rods bearings and other stuff.

4th day in a row of misfire codes... I don't get it at all. Cyl 5 keeps popping up which is odd. I did cylinder 5 injector a few weeks ago, and spark plugs were done 8k miles ago. Before I did cylinder 5 injector I swapped coils with cylinder 4 and it stayed in 5 so I assumed 5 was my problem.

Mine are misfires WOT not cold starts. I replaced cyl 3 injector last summer and cyl 5 a few weeks ago. To replace all 6 I would have to get all 6 new ones which are expensive, along with throwing out the 2 good condition ones I have. Injectors are probably going to be the last thing I try. First is walnut blasting then spark plus then coil packs.
