e90 328i SULEV Warranty Question

Hi Everyone,

I recently had quite a few parts replaced on my 328i under the SULEV warranty. However, they are saying that the spark plugs are not covered but the ignition coils are. I've seen quite a few threads saying that the spark plugs are covered. Does anyone have any insight on this or some repair receipts they can show me where they were replaced under the SULEV warranty? It would really help my case if I had some sort of proof.

On another note, the 6 plugs cost $540 to change. They charged me two hours labor I believe, and I know I could changed them myself in 1 or less. Just wondering if that was a fair price.

Thank you!

Your owner's manual lists what is covered under the SULEV warranty. On mine, coils are covered and plugs are not.

I own an N54, not a SULEV 328i, so I don't know about the SULEV warranty; m_thompson above is probably right, though...

Each BMW-branded spark plug is $20, which means that they're charging you $420 for 2 hrs labor?!

That's absurd. You can change them yourself for $60 in parts (using OEM NGK or OEM Bosch), plus another $30ish in parts, assuming you need to buy the special spark plug socket and a torque wrench.

Takes about an hour to do them if it's your first time; I'm sure an experienced mechanic at a BMW Center can do it in 3/4 that.

I have an N51, did you just tell the dealer to replace the coils under warranty? I want to try to get the dealer to replace my coils under warranty but am worried they are going to give me crap for it.

I have a N52. It won’t hurt to try. Maybe they will do it under a “ Goodwill repair.”

Do you have to have the car registered in the certain sulev states in order to receive the warranty? (Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and DC.)

Talked to a BMW dealer by me. Spark plugs are NOT covered under SULEV warranty technically. The coils are. However, some dealers are nice enough to replace the spark plugs as well because “one can say the bad coils led to bad spark plugs” so it’s dealer and service technician dependent.

I recently had a misfire taken care of at the dealer. They replaced all six coils and all six spark plugs. The SA said that that replacing all of the coils and plugs was BMW's policy.
