Iphone 3Gs and bluetooth garbled on E90 after longer conversations
So my bluetooth seems to work fine when I use my headset. And it was always fine in the car when I had the Version 1 iPhone, it was even fine with the 3Gs. But lately if I am on the phone for more then 5 minutes or so in the car the person on the other end sounds garbled, almost like underwater and crackly.
If I switch off the Bluetooth to the handset they sound perfect again, so I switch back to the BT and its immediately garbled. If I hang up and call the person right back its perfect again for about another 5 minutes or so then gets bad. I am running the latest iPhone software 3.1.2 and the car (06 E90) has a pretty up to date firmware version (updated do to the seat airbag sensor less then a year ago). Anyone else having this problem? I thought it was the phone, but it seems to work fine with my Jawbone headset.

I have been having the exact same issue on my 06 E90 for over a year. Never remembered to complain about it when at the dealer.
Handsfree usually works well, but as you mentioned, calls longer than 5-7 minutes get garbled. The person on the other end always claims to be able to hear me clearly. If you switch the audio device to the iPhone (on the in-call screen of the phone) and then immediately back to the BMW handsfree it usually solves the issue without having to end the call...a pain nonetheless. Anyone else have this issue? |

I just got a new iphone and I am having the same problem except sometimes it is garbled from the very begining of the phone conversation.
There has to be some fix for this? Anyone? |

Yea I think its the 3.1.2 F/W because I dont remember it happening before that and I have had the phone since July.

I have exactly the same issue. After a few minutes of clear conversation it becomes garbled and when I take it off bluetooth and switch back it clears up however sometimes it remains good and other times it quickly becomes garbled again. Maybe its our Princeton area :-)

I have a similar issue, seems like it's iPhone related as my girlfriends BT phone has no problem with call quality in the car. Maybe the new firmware has screwed up the BT chip in the phone somehow? I think BMW puts the BT module in the trunk, which seems strange other than the fact that there's space back there. Seems strange that they couldn't find a smaller module to place up near the driver/dash somewhere that might provide a stronger connection for phones with poor BT signal.

Yea that leads me to believe it was the 3.1.2 firmware upgrade that is causing this.
Maybe I will write Apple, not sure it will get me anywhere but I will try.

I've got a 3GS, with no issues on mine (I've had the car for 2 years, and the 3G never gave me a hastle, either). I've not upgraded to 3.1.2, because I haven't felt like backing up my stuff in order to reJB, so I can't say if the upgrade for you guys is the problem.

I'm having a similar problem, lately I've noticed calls are very broken up but I think it has more to do with the iPhone not putting out enough signal to reach the BT module that's in the trunk. Whenever the phone rings (and it's in my pocket) I answer using the wheel/iDrive and things are not so great. This can easily be fixed by pulling out my phone and holding it near the arm rest (or better yet tossing it in the backseat). This isn't much of a solution in my mind.
I don't recall if this all began around the time of the newest firmware, but I am uptodate so maybe the new OS is downregulating the BT power output from previously? Not sure if there's a way to boost the signal, or if we all wrote nasty letters to Apple if they'd do it. I bet if you jailbreak it there's probably an app for that.... (can't wait for an andriod phone when this contract is up!) |

Yeah I read that in the manual after getting very frustrated trying to figure out what was going on. Doesn't make sense with my situation at all, but that's just what I observed. Anyways I'm going to take it in and see if a software flash will help.
I'm beginning to think it's the most recent iPhone software, but no way to roll back and haven't borrowed any friends phone's yet to try with something else. |
