BTW: according to my dealer, the TCU #84109171590 has dropped WAY down in price; they quoted me only $400.

Do yourself a favor and order the part from Tischer. I just checked the price on that part and its $300.60. Support the dealers that support this site!

Smile My Experience - BWM Bluetooth Retrofit

Just completed a dealer retrofit of a TCU bluetooth retrofit into my 2006 - 323i (e90).

The total cost was $1800 which included $1100 of parts including the TCU, FZD and all brackets/mounts. 4 Hours of labour was charged for the install per BMW recommendation (however this was the 1st retrofit install for the dealer - they spent about 8 hrs in total due to unfamiliarity with the programming process).

The system works great! The bluetooth paried seamlessly with by blackberry curve and BMW Assist / SOS is operational.

After many hours of sourcing info on this forum, my recommendation is to have an authorized dealer supply all parts and do the install. My SA said the programming was tricky and several attempts had to be made for all components to be recognized. They had to contact BMW head office to troubleshoot some install issues.

Well worth the investment,... Good luck all!

I will definitely do that! Some of the older threads I read said Tischer was always out of stock, but if they've got them in stock I will check them out.

Has anyone used the Roveractive kit? I have a 325xi without nav or iDrive, and they say their kit would allow (English speaking) bluetooth without voice command or BMW Assist... This seems to be what a lot of people were after but it doesnt seem like anyone went this way for their install...

i got a kit out of an e90 for my 1er, it was already activated for the e90 and that confused my radio into reading that pre-activated VIN as if it were for my car and hence it works. here's what you need- the FZD- overhead console, the microphone, the TCU, if you find a used already activated one it may be more plug and play, an antenna and the bracket for the trunk. plug them all in and follow the factory instructions for the install and the fiber optic cable switch and it should work. if you get a NEW tcu, then you'll need to have the dealer code it- this is where some have had trouble with dealers not being able to do this all that well. they should be able to figure it out with time though.

roveractive is expensive but it should have all the parts you need. if you want assist then the coding and install gets a little more complicated I think.

I would suggest searching on ebay for the complete kit, preferably one that was working and taken out of a wrecked car while working, that's how I did it- except it was out of a trade in, got the whole kit for $366! of course I have no assist, but I can call the assist ppl with the button, they just dont recognize me- not a big deal for me

Where is the FZD unit located? And is it vehicle specific or can I take it out of a totalled car?

I need to chime in as well. I am having the programming done on Monday for a TCU that I installed. Here is what I've done and discovered so far;

1. Bought a used TCU off ebay for $200. Installed it in the trunk but did not get the bracket. I set it under the trunk floor panel on some heavy rubber instead. I had some confusion about the fiber optic cables. I installed a Sirius module a month ago and had to deal with the cables that I originally moved. What I discovered is that the modules are "pass through" with the fiber optic info. In other words, the info/data/audio flows from the head unit to one module then another and finally loops back to the head unit. It took me some time to understand why there was only one pair of cables coming from the head unit going to the junction block.
Once that was hooked up, before anything else, I got an SOS error message on my info center. I was happy to see the TCU was at least recognized to be "in the loop" if you will. Not working but at least not DOA.

2. Purchased the FZD (overhead console) from LKQ for $30 because I needed the SOS button on it.

3. Purchased the bluetooth antenna and microphone from Ann Arbor BMW.

4. Installed the parts from 2 and 3 and the error msg. went away and the SOS light comes on with the rest of the switches. No indication of bluetooth though.

I spoke to my SA at Erhard BMW in Farmington Hills, Michigan and he said the system will crash several times trying to complete the retrofit unless the car has been completely updated recently. Mine has and he said it should crash just a couple of times. Basically what he means is the download does not completely finish and boots itself off the system and they have to start over. They are charging me $234 for labor (2 hours) and no more.

If the programming works, I will be in it for just under $600. It's a lot for bluetooth but I will have the BMW Assist in case there is an emergency and that could be priceless so the money is not an issue. I will post Monday night and let you know how it went. Crossing my fingers!

Here's what happened today;

Took my 328i to my dealer, Erhard BMW in Farmington Hills, MI.

My service tech (he's now my official service tech whether he likes it or not!) figured out how to manipulate the programming and I'm now up and running with bluetooth. I'm using my ORIGINAL NON SOS FZD!!! I also did not install the speaker under the dash nor did I install the back-up antenna. Just the mic, bluetooth antenna, and TCU.
I did buy a FZD from LKQ online from a 2008 335i but it did not accept any programming as it was installed first when I showed up this morning. It was instrumental in getting my original FZD to work though. It was used to get the programming to a point where it was fooled after putting the original back in place. Somehow.
The only small issue is I have an SOS error that leaves the little warning triangle on my dash display but I need to actually LOOK at it to know it's on as it blends in with the temp/time/mpg etc.. on the display. My tech said it would go away if I ever decide to look and/or buy the correct FZD. I may buy one but it may not be worth the cost to eliminate the little triangle light.

The bluetooth is awsome and my dad, who can't hear anything that is fuzzy or muted, said it sounded like I was on a land line. I had my phone paired up within 10 minutes of leaving the dealer. Blackberry Curve 8520 (Verizon). I have not been able to sync the missed and dialed calls but that may fill up as I use it. My contact list did sync though.

After trying multiple ear pieces, a couple different visor mounted units and some wired headphones, I can easily justify the $600 invested.

If anyone in the Detroit/Ann Arbor/Toledo area needs to have work done, I would HIGHLY recommend hooking up with and demanding to have Sean work on your car. He thought outside the box, did not follow procedure to a dead end and did not give up until he understood how to make it work. Six hours of messing around and they only charged me for two hours labor. That's it. I probably drank $50 worth of coffee while I was in the lobby working on my laptop. He came out multiple times to update me on his progress, was extremely informative and was eager to share his findings with me.

SO...the true answer to all the questions is to find a dealer that has someone like Sean to get the job done.

I believe I am in the lead for the cheapest successful TCU install to date.

Forgive me if i missed it....

In the PDF is shows/says to fold down drivers rear seat backrest, however, my backseats do not fold down. Is the MOST still in the same spot (if so how do u access it) or is it elsewhere. I have not attempted to look as of yet, just getting a head start....

Thanks

If you have the 4FL option (USB in armset) you can simply reprogram the car activating the hands free KIT.

It works because the mulf high module can do bluetooth, but it is deactivated.

Then you need an BT antenna and install the microphone by bringing the cables directly to the mulf high module in the trunk.

Can you tell me what exacly needs to be programmed? Enable SA644?
The USB MULF2 has no bluetooth passkey on it. Can one just use 0000 after enabling the BT functionality?

Hey AoshichanX!

Seems like we complement each other. Very usefull DIY!!
I have a question concerning the retrofit of Bluetooth in my car.

When I bought my car I told the dealer to retrofit USB. In this context they installed the MULF2.
I have the Menu in the CID for pairing a telephone, but it wont work.
My question is ... do I just have to install the bluetooth aerial and the microphone?
If so, can I also use voice commands?
Is the snap-in adapter needed?

Any news about your seats?

Greetings!

OK ... I think I dont need the snap-in for bluetooth ... and I also dont need the bluetooth aerial at the drivers side ... because it is just for better reception
The Microphone is also not needed for pairing ... but why wont it work??
As I said ... I have the option in the CID to pair a telephone ...

anyone an idea?

Well, I couldn't find any instances of anyone taking a GSM TCU and putting it in a 2006 vehicle, but I'm trying it anyway. Looking through BMW's ETK (which has alot more information then RealOEM, imho) from 01/2011 it appears that the parts will work for the vehicle.

I got TCU part 84109321088 along with FZD part 61319209579 from jimk late last year . Checking the part numbers in ETK shows them as valid for a 2006 E90 330i.

84109321088 doesn't show up in RealOEM and ETK because it's a part only put in new cars and BMW doesn't appear to sell brand new TCU's in their parts channels only reman units. The screen below shows that 84109231092 is the remanufactured version of 84109231088.

Digging into the parts use for that part number shows it as an acceptable part for use in a US version 330i E90.

Same with the FZD, 61319209579 shows usage as well in a E90 330i, shown below.

Both of these parts were manufactured around 05/2010.

I guess I'll see this weekend (if my bracket and other parts arrive on time) if it'll all work and if I can retrofit them with ISTA/P.

Works perfectly. I was able to retrofit a new GSM TCU (manufactured 05.2010) into my 2006 (04/05 build) E90 without any issues whatsoever.

ISTA/P picked up the new FZD and TCU and programmed them perfectly.

So if anyone was wondering if they wanted to buy a TCU unit, you can use either the GSM or the CDMA version, at least in the older models. Although, I'm pretty sure you can use any version you want and it'll work just fine.
