People think AWD and all seasons are actually good in snow, but a good snow tire setup in a rear wheel drive car is still way better - I used to drive around SUV's having issues with their crappy all season tires in my old E46 with RWD.

Given the option of AWD with a good set of all seasons and RWD with snow, I would take the AWD anyday of the week.

I did notice my summer tires loosing some grip on cold days. While the winter tires (Dunlop's) don't perform near my summer tires...they are strong performers.
And yes we do get warm winter days in VA. My guess is the soft rubber will wear faster, but other than that they perform well. And on snow are excellent! |

We got 7" yesterday but with 45-50mph winds some roads that border open fields had 10-14" of snow cover. I patrolled in it yesterday from start to finish...exhausting. I have to drive in this stuff in my 2011 Crown Vic with Good Year RSA's. Soso tires on a rear wheel drive vehicle and generally I get along quite well. EVERY vehicle has it's limits and it's key to know yours in order to drive in these conditions safely. All day I laughed at the idiocy in front of me. Most stuck vehicles were there from poor tire tread. There was one that whas as smooth as a drag slick. That dumb ass was surprised when I told him to pull into the closest parking lot and park it...he had no business driving it in this weather. I saw a 4x4 with chrome 22" wheels having trouble getting down a plowed street...idiot still had the high performance (summer) tires on it. Quite a few a good vehicles but the drivers had NO IDEA how to drive in snow. They thought that when you get stuck you freed yourself by flooring it until your car smokes. One lady got indignant when I asked if she had EVER driven in snow before, her car would slide and she kept turning INTO the direction it was going rather than turning in the direction you want it to go. UGH, what a loooong frustrating day. Several 4x4 trucks had to get towed out because the drivers thought they could drive through anything. I have NEVER owned a set of snow tires...maybe one day when I have the extra coin. I have DWS on my 330i and I get by fine. However, I don't try to navigate 10" of snow that even snow tires would not help. Know your limits and drive accordingly. Otherwise, stay at home and make the rest of us more safe.

Hey we just 45cm here in Montreal Canada - that is a shit load of snow - and my E93 performed very well. I'm really happy cause I was very hesitant coming from E92 Xi especially here north of the border the winter don't play lol! i have 17'' set up...it doesn't real great but awesome in the snow!

@Dark: Winter tires have a softer compound. Summer tires are to hard (loosing grip) at low temperatures! And ofcourse the profile of the tire...

* with maybe 1 exception when you use shitty winter tires and the best (Conti DWS) AS tires. |

Do you even know what a fact means? I dont want to sound like a broken record like you, but there are things that a AWD with all season can do better than RWD with snow.

Yea I figured you were bro. I know we're cool, just had an off day at the office and got confused for the minute. Lack of sleep will do that to ya. Have a great New Year's Boost, and be safe!
