I uninstalled my BMS OCC- can someone please verify on their N55 engine whether I am

So the BMS oil catch can for N55 looked like this today when I uninstalled it.

The following are some pictures of how much was in the can, and also if anyone can tell me what the hell kind of fluid is in this jar they're a better man / woman than I! ( I assume it's mostly gas vapor- I see no oil in this mixture- reeks mostly of gas...horribly!)

Finally, my last picture shows putting it back to what I think is stock- this is the most important picture for you guys and gals to review for me- can someone please confirm that everything is okay before I start to drive?

Also does anyone know the name of the part shown in the engine bay? I snapped the top clip, and I think I need a new one.

This is my first time doing something like this, and if I did it right, then I'm rather proud of myself!

Please help. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

The OCC catches what your engine blows out the PCV so it's doing it's job. Maybe gas. I dont know as far as the set up since I have an N54

Emptying mine today

Because it's not actually catching oil.

It seems to be all gas and water vapor, and gets recycled back into the engine. I am just not convinced that this is needed on an N55 engine. I could always get a walnut blast later on down the road.

In addition to that, the bottom output hose started leaking. I knew I smelled some sort of a gasoline odor coming from the front of the car.

So can anyone confirm if my OEM stock setup is correct please?

Idk cause I don't have an n55. You should be able to reference some YouTube videos though.

That's actually a good idea to check that- thanks man.

Well I found a YouTube video on how to change the spark plugs on an N55 and I think I got a glimpse of that PVC pipe that runs from the bottom of the oil crankcase to the top. I think I got it correct- fuck it is what it is.

If anyone gets the chance to pop their engine cover on their N55 on this nice day please take a shot and post it please- does anyone know what that part is even called?

The color of what you caught looks correct. I've seen pics of N55 intake looking more orange than black.

Looks like it really isn't catching anything useful- especially after 7 months. I just really need to know if that stock part is installed correctly LOL...

I googled images of it, tried YouTube- nada! Caught a glimpse of it during a spark plug change DIY video for N55, but just need to see a comparison pic from one of you guys hopefully!

I thought BMS has a bunch of videos and PDFs on how to install these things. Hell, I know they do for the N54 at least--I followed it to install mine.

Just find the correct one for your model year, and reverse it.

Yup there are oodles of videos for the N54.

I was hoping to do that, but there is just a PDF, and a picture with the damn thing already installed with a paragraph of text. I am fairly sure it is correct.

Interesting.....

I was just about to pull the trigger and order an OCC for my N55. Obviously don't want oil in the intake system, not just because of potential buildup on the valves, but also reducing the efficiency of the intercooler.

However, if the recirculation is mostly gas and not oil, it's probably not a bad thing for it to be flowing over the backs of the valves. Might have some detergent property, though that is admittedly a tiny amount compared to how much flows by in a non direct injected engine (all of it).

That said, if there is no oil, there is no need for detergent either, so i'm leaning towards still putting one on. It may not help, but I don't think it will hurt.

I am actually in the process of emailing Terry to try to get some new hoses, metal clamps, and that gray plastic coupler piece, and a new gasket.

My O- ring gasket that goes inside the top of the catch can by the oil baffle and the nipples was quite a bit stretched out.

While taking out the catch can to change it, I found that the hoses were just squeezed on without any of the clamps that I provided to the dealer, and the hose just popped right off- no bueno.

As a matter of fact, I think it was halfway off to begin with, and that gas and water vapor mixture has been spraying into the engine bay all this time.

Serves me right for having a dealer but the damn thing on.

That said, I want to stress that this is NOT the fault of the oil catch can, as my last installation was absolutely perfect and done by the now defunct AK Motorwerk

Cool- share pictures Ken! I am super curious as to how much more oil it catches on the N54. As for me and my N55, I can't imagine it's a bad thing to have gas and water going into the engine anyway, where it would've went to begin with

Good news & bad news...only 1/4" of oil in my OCC after 6 months.

Bad news...I noticed my car was a quart low on oil so I decided to do some checking. I found a leak in my valve cover gasket between injector 2 & 3 where the bolt is located. I also found a leak in my oil filter housing gasket. Double whammy !

Good news...just found my 3rd party warranty will cover both Off to BMW Monday. That will save me 8 hrs of work and my weekend next week.

That's too bad brother, but at least it's covered as you said.

Good stuff Ken!

From this, we can see what the score is.

That is exactly what what I would've expected in my catch can, but instead I got that watery gas mixture.

So in my estimation, this proves the fact that it is essential to have an oil catch can on your N54, but not nearly as necessary on an N55.

From what I understand, the oil distribution and the Vanos technology has been completely redone on the N55 anyway, eliminating these oil over sprays for the most part- if not altogether.

Yeah, I would have to agree but wonder if Mike@N54tuning has anything to say about this.

That is a lot of oil to catch. It only takes a bit to cake and bake on to your intake valves. The N55 does not blow as much oil as the N54 but part of that is because it can't make as much boost/power as the N54 can. Still it's good insurance against more expensive repairs down the road.

My experience with the BMS OCC: this after 3000 miles.

This is on my N54 2007 e90. And this is a GOOD thing. It means my car's cyclonic oil separators are doing a good job.
