A few things, a friend of mine did this on his e39 540, e36 m3 and Tony at VTT tossed the idea around a bit. Also, owning 3 335i's gives you a lot of opportunities to try just about anything. I go through around 1/4 qt of oil every 5-6k but i usually change my oil before then so it works out. My car is at 106k and its been extremely solid.

I bought my 2+'s back years before I worked for VTT and they're still on the car with low 30k miles on them. I might do a dissection/article on them once I upgrade to some larger snails. We have a few guys with quite a few miles, the record I think is 50k from some dude with stage 2's, running 20 psi, still going strong. If you size the turbo according to a reasonable life cycle (i.e. don't do what we do on the race car), you can get quite a bit of mileage out of them. Any manufacturing defects aside, the problem is normally poor installation, poor troubleshooting (i.e. don't know how to do boost leak checks), improper maintenance, and of course just spinning the bajezus out of them.

Being new to the N54 platform and looking at all these failed aftermarket turbo issues from RB ect is just sad? Ok the odd guy here and there gets 20-30k but most dont make it that far at all. 10 yrs later and still not a solid reliable twin turbo option ? ST really seems the way to go with the option these days of quick spooling turbos good for 600whp. If you want more ltr the turbo is right there to swap out.

VTT stg 2+ @ 26/27 psi.... So far about 15k miles. No issues. Still strong.

Change oil frequently (every 2-3k miles), let car warm up to temp before beating on it and take care of regular maintenance.

We love seeing this. Install is huge. For the love of all that is beautiful do a boost leak check with at least target boost. Maintenance is huge. Being kind to your old girl when you work her hard is huge. Warm her up, cool her down. Basic stuff. Also... like I told someone who was asking me about built motors, if something feels funny get off of the pedal on the right. Do all these things and they tend to last a long time.

Drive them hard!

Yup, was VERY tempted to go with upgraded turbos. Read up on the aftermarket scene last year, and came to the conclusion that for me, OEM is the best bet. OEM's have proven to be the most reliable. For some, the cost of the twins, and install is not a big deal. But being a DD, wife, kids, mortgage etc..OEM works best.

There has got to be a reliable option that isnt stock. Stocks rattle within 1k miles. Im looking for an upgrade as well.

If you mean the flapper valve rattling on the housing... that's any N54 designed turbo, unless you change wastegate position via tune (JB4 and MHD can do that) to hold the valve a little further off of the housing. Rattling because of wear in the wastegate assy itself is mostly a thing of the past now.

RB classics. FBO + Meth 19 PSI +80K miles, a little smoking now and then.
Visual inspection when I removed them did not show a potential cause.

Refurbished because of upgrade to new generation RB.

So, what, go with OEM BMW for $3,200 or Mitsubishi for $1,600?

OEM for $3200? Where? No way they cost that much. Even here in Toronto, Canada where we get (pardon the expression) "RAPED" for the cost of parts compared to our friendly neighbors down south, would OEM turbos cost that much. Last I checked (early last year) they were $2000 CAD at the dealership, and if you join the local "BMWTRUENORTH" car club and present your membership card when you order the turbos, you get an addtional 10% off! at select BMW dealerships.

Little company called ECS, unless I'm misunderstanding OEM BMW.

Wow.....I am totally shocked bro. I had no idea ECS tuning sells them for that much.....smh. Its actually cheaper here in Toronto. They are $1200 a pair without the install kit. I see your point.

It's been discussed a 1000x

Just like with anything else, the OEM parts are much cheaper than the OE versions:

So what is the best choice for someone that wants to upgrade turbos and have the best mileage lasting? Hybrid turbos or single?
