Run flats and BMW warranty/insurance

I was wondering if anyone has experience with run flats and the dealer provided warranty. When the associate sold me the policy for rims/tires, he stated that it would be in my best interest to "accidently" run over nails before my warranty expired to get a free set of tires. He said that this should be done in two separate trips rather than popping all four at once and filing a claim.

Has anyone else heard this from a salesman? The salesman said that he himself and the other associates have done this with their vehicles on numerous occasions to get new tires.

Thanks

He said that this should be done in two separate trips rather than popping all four at once and filing a claim. He said that this method is foolproof and I have nothing to worry about. I wasn't going to get the policy until he told me that everyone uses this to get new tires at a cheaper rate.

Has anyone tried this/is it really as easy as he made it sound? I know this is pretty of shady but the sales associate was adamant that I do this and take advantage of the policy I paid for. He said that he himself and the other associates have done this with their vehicles on numerous occasions to get new tires.

Thanks
I was dropping my car off at BMW to be serviced and over heard the person next to me using the warrenty on there tires because of a nail so I could believe that it would work how could they prove you we not telling the truth?

I agree with you entirely. It seemed pretty sketchy the way he was describing it. I kinda figured he was using that as a selling point more than anything else.

A single instance with no pattern, probably no consequences.

IMHO though anyone with such a lack of morals as to seriously consider this epitomizes the old porcupine/BMW joke. (With a porcupine, the pricks are on the outside)

These warranties have nothing to do with BMW. They are provided through a third party. Dealerships make a ton of money on selling them and I have heard of all kinds of stories they tell to convince folks to sign on the dotted line. The scenario given above is in fact fraud. I doubt that free tires are worth the potential of legal issues involved should the warranty company catch on.

Don't really feel like reading everything but this is what I know. Yes you can and not you can't at the same time I have the run flat warranty and if my rim cracks I get a new rim and a new tire, but the rate the tire from 1-4 for tred. If its at 2 and under the warranty won't cover it. So just make sure you have tread before doing it, sounds stupid but yeah

Surprisingly, this greasy SA told me I should do it before it expired.

Personally, I don't care if a rear RFT is now $433 ea. If I got a flat, I'd use it. If not, let it expire.

I paid $390 for my tire protection back in 12/06, and I never got a flat, so I never used it. I'm not going to commit fraud over $390. It has to be at least $400 or $425.

Plus disposal fees and labor. Total bill for a 255/35/18 Potenza rear tire on my E93 a couple weeks ago was $500.34, with the insurance I paid $50 deductible. Cost of the insurance works out to about $17/month.

I don't have an issue with them at this point, but I expected a "firm" ride. I might feel differently if I'd chosen a sedan.

I paid $1,300 (which I was told was a discounted rate) with $0 deductible. Kinda regretting paying for this now. But I guess with L.A. roads it might not be a bad idea to have it. I've already nailed some serious potholes and had the car for less than a month.

In Canada I bought my warranty through BMW and not a Third Party
and let me tell ya it is worth the Money.

In the last year
2 style 313 19"
2 19" bridgestones
2 17" dunlop sp winter tires

If I would have had to pay out of Pocket, it would have been a fortune.

This Warranty should be a no brainer to any1 buying a BMW.(and as always except the first price that is given to ya)

I'm doing my 'deal' with the Biz Manager @ the dealer - X3 28i - 3 year lease - 15,000/yr
they recco the tire warranty for the run flats - $1300 plus a $50.00 deductible.
this insurance seems high. they're also selling 'ding' insurance and a few other 'add -ons' - should i take any of these? i'm new to BMW
thanx

If you are getting 19s then i would suggest you get the insurance as they are BRUTAL and you WILL bend a wheel or 4 . If the salesman tells you to run over a nail every few months stand up and go to another dealer. I can't believe that act.

I purchased BMW provided Road hazard warranty. I ran over a plank of wood with nails on the highway with the left side of my car. Both of the left tires went flat.

The Service Advisor asked a few questions, looked at the tires, took pictures, and replaced them with new OEM tires and balanced them too.

I didn't have to pay anything else. The receipt showed that the hazard insurance paid $930.

Because it is so nice and worthwhile, I would not recommend scamming the system.

Paid $1250. Pricey and wasn’t sure if it’s worth it for 18’s wheels. My dealer told me if I ever switch to snow tires/wheels, it would also cover them as well as along as they are OEM tires/wheels. Now I don’t worry about damaging tires/wheels.

The salesman that sold me my CPO told me the exact same thing ("you know... if the tire's thread is within some mm, they'll replace it and.. you know...")

I purchased the tire protection from another dealership $425 or so.

ended up hitting hole at the mall and it cause a bubble... the warranty people covered the replacement tire 100% no problems... just paperwork BS....

now the 2nd time i rode over a highway reflector and it F'd my car up. punctured the rim& tire (quarter size hole). they tire warranty company dicked around with the paperwork twice as much and ended up screwing me out of 100% of the replacement cost of the tire/rim and balance work... they ended up paying 60% or so stating.... "in their computer the tire...wheel was worth $168 and $250" . The rim was ordered direct from the dealer $450 or so.

still i came out ahead and would buy it again for expensive runflat tires with the propensity to bubble. but for regular NON runflat tires ... naw.

You do realize that California roads are as smooth as a babies bottom compared to roads in places that have actual winter? I have a pothole in my DRIVEWAY that has developed in the past couple years.

People from California must come to New England and think they are driving on the moon!

That said, I haven't had a flat since 1989 (6"shard of steel through the tire) - if you pay attention to what you are doing while driving, wheel and tire insurance is not necessary. Also helps to avoid the more fashion victim wheel sizes. And insurance fraud is generally a lousy idea.
