Forge have almost finished development of their intercooler and intake on our project 135i.

The Intake is a prototype at the moment and will be tested in the next week to see how well it works.

The products will then be available exclusively from evolve from the begining of April. I will provide more details about price and specification closer to the time.

Have just had the results back from Forge.

The intake did not work well so that is on the back burner for now. I have a Simota Carbon (like the Gruppe M) which I will be testing next week.

The intercooler did produce good results on a rolling road local to Forge HQ. The car has an evolve tune and BMW Performance exhaust.

Pre Forge intercooler: 381bhp and 376 ft/lb
Post Forge intercooler: 395.7 bhp and 400.2 lb/ft

We will be adjusting the map to suit the intercooler on the car at some point later this month.

If the weather is good the owner will be at Santa Pod on Sunday to see how the car performs on the strip. Another evolved 135i will also be there so it will provide a good comparison.

Any plans for a diesel one for 335d or 535d. I have looked at fitting an EVO 7 intercooler to my 535d but not going to be easy

The forge intakes never made it out of development because there were no power gains.

The induction in terms of power gains looks straight off the bat like it wouldn't produce power, so I'm not surprised it didn't. Differing hose length, a really sharp bend on the right intake and sharp restrictive metal cuts in the curves.

The intercooler looks lovely though... And very impressive power gains seem to be reported there..

Many thanks, interesting how the power gain is very slightly better at higher RPM, is this because a temp is cooler at speed by default?

PS.It makes your remaps look a bargin, cost over gains.

More efficient intercoolers provide more gains at higher rpm as this is when the higher temps build up with the less efficient stock intercooler. Upgraded intercoolers provide lower air intake temps (AITs) in comparison at high rpms.

The difference in AITs and therefore power is more pronounced on a remapped car and/or after multiple WOT runs as this is when the stock intercooler gets heatsoaked.

An intercooler is not just about gains in power, it is also about looking after your stock turbos. A lower pressure drop through the intercooler accounts for some gains (meaning the turbos don't need to work as hard to acheive the same boost target) + a cooler, more dense air charge means that the turbos don't need to work as hard to achieve the boost target.

All in all, an upgraded FMIC is only really beneficial when running a tune - this is where the limitations of the stock FMIC and increased heat build up (leading to heatsoak and boost decay at high rpms) really impact on peak power levels and the longevity of stock turbos.

Exhausts never give up hardly anything on a £1k investment.
Bigger downpipes and front cat delete at 3" clearly do though, especially on a tune.
Not yet seen an intake mod better than the dual cones (bin the oem airbox) on paper.
Will be trying that soon...

The exhaust is not very restrictive - there is a little power to be had changing it but most people will change it for noise. Just pick the one you like the sound and look of.

Intake wise we have tested Gruppe M, Simota, AFE and various dual one intakes. None of them have showed any power gains in our dyno testing.

We have not tested them back to back. The Forge is less expensive and we stock it in the UK.
