weight difference between 330i and 335i
I'm just doing some thinking.
The 330i is lighter than the 335i. 330i: 3417lbs (manual) 335i: 3616lbs (manual) The n52 engine is approximately 75lbs lighter than the n54 due to the magnesium in the construction and the aluminum cylinder sleeves. The n54 requires a full aluminum block and iron cylinder sleeves due to the pressure and heat the turbo setup produces. So, if the 330i is 200lbs heavier than the 335i, and 75lbs is from the engine, where does the other 125lbs come from? please discuss. |

BMW's marketing division. They never make accurate weight estimates.

What does that supposed 75lbs difference include? Just the long block, or is it the entire engine + accessories? Things like oil coolers, intercoolers, turbos and associated hardware can add a lot. Also, as was mentioned the exhaust and brakes are different (there's more of both).

I think JeremyDS got it.
Sure the N54 is only 75lbs heavier; but then you add the turbos, intercooler, and all the tubing/brackets.

+1 I think JeremyDS is right, too. As for the brakes, the front brakes on the 335i are bigger (13.7 versus 13.0) the rears are the same (13.2). Not much weight difference there.

This sounds like a potential easy upgrade.

As far as it being 'easy', I do know that when I upgraded my '00 323Ci's front brakes to those of the 328, I had to change the 'carriers' in front, because they would not support the larger size rotor. But other than that, very noticeable improvement....especially much better ability to tailgate at a high speed..(LOL). |

Reported brake sizes here: http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z...i/default.aspx http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z...i/default.aspx http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z...i/default.aspx http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z...i/default.aspx I always thought the 325i and 328i had the same size (11.8") brakes, but according to that site, the 325i brakes are a little smaller at 11.0".
