Brake Ducts and etc.

Well, been tracking for a year on this car, always thought it would be nice to finally have a set of nice big brake kits with 355-380mm rotors and some nice fixed 6 pot calipers on the track. But given costs of these kits and the fact I will have to fork out another $1000-2000 for a set of 18-19" winter wheels (car is still a DD), it is just a little hard to justify for me at the moment.

Stock brakes are actually quite capable if you slap on some real race pads, the only real issue that I have found out is slight uneven pad wear due to soft rubber brake guide bushings and lack of air flow around the rotors. This video explains the problem quite well FYI.

Fortunately, Bimmerworld sells those solid brass replacement bushings (http://store.bimmerworld.com/bimmerw...e-kit-p46.aspx).

There have been a few threads on brake ducts before, but most of these have inlets that are the same diameter as the duct itself, which I am sure severely limits the volume of air that actually gets to the rotors.

http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=316897
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=700972
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=347978
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=864146

I figure the better solution is retain the stock brake ducts that use them to channel the air into the ducts.

And this is how it turn out. Not bad I suppose, but true tests wont come until April when the tracking season starts again in the midwest.

You might noticed already, while I am at this, I had the shop installed the Dinan oil cooler and auxiliary radiator from the PPK kit. Even with stock oil cooler, I, for one, haven't bump into any limp mode issue so far, thanks to the max cool function on JB4 that allow the water pump and fan to run at full speed on the track. But a bit of extra cooling never hurt on this platform Foglights are also removed, to get a bit of extra airflow.

It is trimmed accordingly and going back on to the car, of course.

Did you go with bigger vent on the right?
Also do you have a vent on the left side now as well?

Dinan oil cooler comes with vent already, so the old stock one goes to the trash. And yes, I ordered the $5 plastic vent for the driver side as well, but didn't get the full ducting kit from the bumper to the radiator. Considering it is a $240 kit for some pieces of plastic, I just don't feel it is necessary, especially with the foglight delete.

I would appreciate if you post more info on the left side vent.
Link, photos, part number and etc...

This is what you need for the driver side vent. Exactly the same as the passenger side, just a mirrored copy of it. Btw, it's $18 not $5 that I remembered, lol.

But as stated in many other threads, you are better off with another oil cooler on the driver side instead of this auxiliary radiator if yours is a 6MT.

No other pictures yet, since the car is still in the shop waiting for the repainted bumper to finish and final suspension alignment

The little vent makes a big difference and you can get it separate. I think the M3 inner liner is different because M3 has wider body, but I could be wrong.

You could probably get the 335is driver's side wheel liner...but that vent matches up pretty well to the standard liner, you just have to cut out the hole yourself.

Cloud9, how much did the radiator and tubing for the PPK cost you? Can you list the part kit you needed for that install?

I currently have the fog light delete, and just installed the vent and ducts from the 335is and cut out the liner, but would be nice if I actually had something in that fender.

That's what I ordered.

But FYI, the studs on the black mounting bracket were too short for the thick rubber mounts that BMW use for these radiator. I got lazy and didn't feel like returning it for the correct part (51647975360, not the 51647154545 that ECS provided), so I just ripped out the rubber bushings and used some thin steel spacers to make it work.

The whole thing is coming along nicely

Awesome, thanks! I didn't realize it wasn't that expensive. Did you get the fan upgrade from the PPK too?

EDIT: BTW, what mesh grilles did you use for the bumper corners, are those home made?

Nope, and don't think you can get that without going for the full PPK kit, plus fan really isn't necessary once you get the car moving anyway.

awesome work!

i know a lot of teams position their ducts onto the rotor surface but then you're localizing the cooling to one side of the rotor. it'd be best (if there's enough space due to suspension components) to have the duct shoot cool air into the hat of the rotor and exit through the vanes and vents.

Thanks, looks like the shop did a pretty good job. Can't wait to pick it up later this week.

FYI, that's what I told the shop to do, but given that the hub carrier is in the way, this is the best we can do without custom fabing a brand new heat shield. And with these sliding single piston calipers, it is always the pad on the piston side that wear slightly quicker, so the ducts should cancel thing out in theory, lol.

Lol, I wish I am talented enough to weave my own mesh grilles.

I used the Gloss Black Diamond XXL mesh from here. Looks like it's a good match to the gloss black kidney grills that I have, but I have yet to see the whole thing in person yet.
