I just found DS mode yesterday and wow what a difference..At first I was like damn XI why does it feel like this, why? I guess everyones else feels the lack of HUMF on 1st gear in regular drive, but in DS mode its a different car!!! car currently has 450 miles cant wait till its all broken in..

Yeah, its the same with the other model transmissions. Its like using only 5 gears when you have 6 to use. I try to go SMG on streets, when I remember. But sometimes after work when I'm tired...it's nice to go full auto...but DS of course.

I have found this to be the case. Higher fuel consumption, faster shifting and greater throttle response - as well as holding lower gears longer and prefering 5th to 6th gear on the highway. I didn't realize there was any debate on this...has always been rather obvious to me. |

I think in D mode, the car starts off 2nd gear. If you put it in Manual mode and select 2nd gear from a stop at a light, it feels the same way as D. Selecting DS engages 1st gear from a stop and tops out at 5th gear with increased shift points across the board.

The ZFTU provides 40% less lag time to initiate a shift and 50% less time to complete a shift then the previous models. Not to mention that paddle shifters are the Bomb. Great article about it in June’s Bimmer mag. |
