Service Reminder Won't Reset

Hello,

This has been going on for a while now and I'm just now getting around to posting about it.

Whenever I turn on my car, it gives me a reminder for 13k miles from now and for 2019.

I can't seem to get this to clear; when I go into the service reset menu it just shows a box with a check mark in it and pressing or even holding the "BC" button does nothing at all.

I took a short video of the issue so you can see for yourself. Sorry about the portrait mode.

How do I get this reminder to go away??

I was actually going to post something similar to this.

I have an 09 335 xDrive.

On cold start, I get the same oil warning you get. I've reset the service date and it shows the same date you have as well.

When I go to check the oil level after cold start, it takes a while to actually register the oil level. It actually takes so long that the screen to show the oil level ends up going away (5 second time out i think). So after a few minutes of driving, I can finally access it and it shows its OK at the full level.

Hoping someone can help make sense of this

The oil level thing you're experiencing is normal.

I think the car has a checklist of things like time, temp, throttle position, etc that have to be met before it will even show you oil level. This is just what I've heard so I may be wrong.

Thanks, good to know.

I've set up some time in the shop tomorrow to see if they can better diagnose the issue of the light popping up still.

Most likely will replace the oil level sensor and will def. get an oil change and see if that changes anything. It's a car I purchased recently, and I was told it had an oil change prior to me purchasing, but I'm going to play it safe and have it re-done with liquimolly.

Please update me with what they say!

I have changed my oil and that's when this started popping up, I wonder if I somehow messed up the service reset procedure and made this service light come on all the time somehow. I just don't know how to make it stop!

Will do.

Yea it's strange for me too because when I go to see the status of the oil, I see the exact same date as you. I also reset the oil service reminder via the DIY that was posted (same steps you took I believe), and it still shows me the oil indicator every morning when I start the car up. But it never shows again throughout the day. Only seems to show on a true cold start.

mine doesnt do this.

Weird that the dates are the same.

Do you know when you changed your oil last? I did mine on 3/20/2017. May just be a coincidence if we changed it on the same month.

Update:

Unrelated to the service date; I got the red oil icon the other day for low oil pressure. I have also been getting a check engine with P0012 code. Brought it into my local shop, they pulled the oil pan and found tons of rubber debris from a belt that had broken before I bought the car. Apparently there was an oil leak that leaked right onto the belt, the mechanic believes that part of the belt got sucked in. All of that blockage caused the low pressure as well as the P0012. It's all been cleared out now and the car is running much stronger than when I purchased, no codes yet. New oil change too

Any update on the service light that won't go away? Did they get it to go away? My car has no codes.

Good to hear your car is running better!

Yep, the service light is gone as well. Not sure if it went away because the issue was fixed, or if he cleared the codes and reset the oil reset indicator. But I've been driving now for 3 days and it hasn't popped back up. When I tried to do the oil service reset before the mechanic worked on it, that didn't seem to work. But now that I'm thinking about it, that might not have been the reason the service light was showing.

Hmm. Perhaps I should rescan for codes.

I wonder if my car has perhaps sensed a problem that isn't urgent, but should be checked out in 12k miles or whatever.

I'll scan after work today and report back.

So I scanned the car with Carly, 3 trivial codes came up which I cleared.

Then I drove home from work, checked codes again, no codes.

I bought the service reset capability for Carly ($5.50) and was able to reset both the car check and oil service (remember through the dash I could not reset the oil, as seen in the original post's video)

The service reminder successfully reset for the oil, but now when I start my car, it still shows me 15000 miles and 2 years from now. Same problem, but different mileages and dates.

WTF gives??

Hmm, that's strange. Let me check my oil dates when I start up the car for lunch. I'll report back to see what it says. Glad you were able to clear the code though - I wonder why it never reset on it's own.

I checked and it shows 13,000 miles - 05/2019. Not sure how that's being calculated.

Wait, so is it supposed to show you the oil change reminder every time you start the car, no matter how far from the change you are? Or did you actually have to navigate the menus with the stalk to see how long you have?

Thats the "problem" I have, it shows me mileage and date until next oil change on the dash every single time i start the car, despite being 15k miles and 2 years away from one.

It shows it to me every time I start the car, comes up for just a second or two. When I go to the service menu via the stalk on the left, and check the oil, it only shows me the oil level.

Then maybe I don't have a problem after all! I didn't think it was supposed to show you the reminder every time you started the car....

That's pretty dumb.

Agreed What I do find interesting is the indicator for 13k miles. Is that the standard? I thought 10k miles was. Either way, I tend to get mine done way before then so it's not a problem - just find it strange that it's so long in between changes. I think that's what made me question the dates and mileage in the first place.
