Activation Code for Map Upgrade?

I picked up my car from BMW service and on the passener seat I found 3 discs that the technician must have left there. Of course I popped in Disc 1 and it asked me if I had the activation code, which I didn't so I answered no and it stopped the update.

Does anyone know how I can get the activation code? If someone gives it to me, I'll send that person these discs when I'm done.

The discs were original BMW and had a picture of a NAV printed on it in color like a DVD. Also printed on the discs were:

Navi
Naviagtion
Road Map
North America
PREMIUM 2010
Disc No's. 1-3

Enabling code essential
FSC SWID: 002D0001

The dealer needs to order the activation codes for the map update, but you need to pay for the maps first, as the request for the codes require your VIN.

Enable Code Certificate for Navigation Map Data
For Navigation Map Enable codes in the downloaded ZIP file is a PDF document available. The PDF contained the 20-digit Enable code. The printed document is for manually input of the Enable code by programming system or input by iDrive controller (e.g. Map Update by customer). The printed PDF document is always hand over to the customer.

mbcar1177,
What do you get when you go to Navigation->Options->Navigation system version?

Can you send photos of the discs?
Do you see a 3-digit version number like 1.x.x anywhere?

Hmmm..this leads me to think that 2009-2 maps have been updated. I wonder if nav sys ver 1.4.6 has been updated, too.

Maps not only have been updated, from now on you need a security code to load them.

The days of Torrent maps seems to be over.

From the start we know a code is needed, but not even TeleAtlas is providing info on updates. So far both drivers and dealers are in the dark. This goes for 7 series drivers, too!

I meant that from the "old" iDrive to the new iDrive codes are required to load maps now.

The map codes are generated the same way as FSC codes when CIC units are replaced and there's a nice detailed OEM document explaining where and how to do it, both when the codes are free (with the purchase of the maps or warranty) and when the customer/dealer needs to pay the costs to generate the codes (for retrofit).

But so far, 4 dealers and even BMWNA do not want to read their own documentation in my personal experience as they do not have absolutely no idea of how to do this any other way but for warranty purposes.

Since there's no shortcuts, how much is it if I buy the code from a dealer? Does anyone know of a dealer that has good prices on a map upgrade, or is it a uniform price across the dealer network?

Road Map 2010 upgrade

In France or Germany, the upgrade costs 150€=180$ if done by the garage.
You can buy the 3 DVDs set + activation code for 179€=215$. Keep in mind that the activation code given will be generated after you gave your VIN number.. Therefore, no one else will be able to install the DVDs with your code

In the UK its about £100, mine required a full system upgrade and recode (manuf. & bought Apri 2009).

The dealer only left me the activation code, not the disks.

Quite a few map changes for the UK (but still only 5 digit postcodes), and the full system upgrade and recode showed a quite a few small changes across the iDrive system.
