I'd save the cash and buy a Mk5 GTi ED30 for c£14k and spend a couple of more grand upgrading it. I still miss mine. I think it's nailed on to be a future classic and it's looks are timeless. Retro, yet, very modern. Possibly the best all round car I've ever owned. It would be the E90 330d - if it wasn't for it's shocking ride.

I thought the R had a older version of the engine found in the S3, which is more robust than the engine in the current GTI. It's also fitted the "newest" version of the 4 motion 4 wheel drive system. I never actually test drove one, but the mechanical running gear of the R is in no way the same as the GTI, they just happen to look the same. But it's defiantly not worth £10K more ....and how VW thinks it can get away with shunting +200BHP through the front wheels without a mechanical LSD is madness...a bit like BMW refusing to a LSD to anything without a M badge

The engine does have some differences, yes, but none that you need to worry about. The main difference between the MK5 GTi and ED30/Pirelli was the turbo and some supporting engine parts (which I agree are stronger) whereas now, the turbo in the MK6 GTI and R are the same, meaning although the R IS better at handling power upgrades, the GTI is easily up to 320 bhp with no trouble. As you said, not worth £10k and not worth a single penny more than an S3. Worth less in fact. I hate cars like the MK6 R. They should be stopped from happening and to do so, I would love to encourage every single potential buyer to keep their money to themselves. VW are trading on the 'R' brand and have shamelessly cashed in on what limited reputation it has (following the franky dogshit MK5 R32) by making a substandard, overpriced car like the MK6 R. Matt |

I'd take the MK5 GTi over the MK5 R32 any day.

But Matt - is the Golf R was say mid-tweenties it would be good value and probably make it a great car?
Of course, that would mean the GTI would need to be, say 20k (which would also make more sense)

If an XJ220 was £39,995 on the road then Jag might not have been bought by Ford or whoever and we'd have a 200 mph speed limit... Theoretically... Regards Matt |
