Even the GTi is expensive with a few options added.

Dsg is very quick and smooth

But for me if you're not constant traffic driving the dsg will take the fun away from what appears a fun car

I had looked at the Golf and Scirocco R as I really liked the look of them but VW are truely having a laugh with the pricing of them, TBH anyone paying that sort of money for one must have money to burn they are just simply not worth the cost.

Lovely car - great engine, as was in my MK5 GTi - but totally overpriced. At the end of the day, it's still a Golf and it look not much different from a bog standard one. The seats are stunning and it feels very composed around bends. Could do with a throatier engine note though - suppose a Miltek would fix that

Drove a Mk5 GTI DSG at the ring last year and its amazing, from the reviews it seems a GTI mk6 with options is far better choice than the R especially as the R is same engine now no more v6

IMO seroiusly looking at a GTIs as next car

Test drove a Golf GTI before I bought my 335i.

Wasn't a bad car at all, but understeered horribly when pushed with a rubbish "electronic diff" instead of the real thing . 4 pod engine sounded a bit too harsh. Was well put together but not to the same level as the 335i.

Never test drove an R, but with 4 wheel drive I would assume its a different beast all together. I actually nearly put down £34K for a brand new R....it was only the fact it would take 8-10 weeks for delivery that made me think twice...looking back it was a lucky escape....£34K for a Golf what was I thinking

A Renaultsport Megan RS is a much better hothatch, and will lap faster than most sports cars and on a track. Just a shame it was a bit too small for my needs, and will fall apart after 1 year

Appreciate the comments folks.

still in two minds about it. It is an expensive golf.. But will it retain much of that? I really don't want something thats going to drop like a stone.

And.... Will I get the enjoyment out of it...

As the Honest John review states 'don't let the MK6 Golf fool you, this car is basically the same as the outgoing model.' Which it is.

The MK6 GTI has the same turbo and some other components as the MK5 Edition 30 and Pirelli, making it an excellent choice in my book.

The MK6 R however is a real balls up if you ask me. Same engine, few extra trinkets and a shit, pseudo 4wd system for more money than an S3 with higher base spec.

Frankly, it should be shunned. By a GTI, mod it, laugh at the fuckwits in R's and spend the extra 10k on hookers and first cut coke. Or something that isn't a pile of wank or otherwise a complete waste of money...

What you need is an SLK 55 AMG only 18,000 miles and 355bhp. Depreciation should be pretty good as well.

The DSG is a must I think the the GTI. maybe it was the better setup on the track prepped GTI but the one i drove had no problem putting the power down.

Yes the AWD will help but at same time adds extra weight. Swings both ways really each has its cons and pros

As I said, same. So is the R more or less.
