Are you a Mobil 1 sales or marketing rep specializing in 5-30w oil? I can't think of any other reason someone would be so adamant and passionate about a specific type/weight of oil. I am a huge fan of Mobil 1 and have been using it all my cars for years. They make a great product so long as you use the correct one. |

Thanks...
Thanks E90Fleet (and others). This thread has been very educational!
After your coorespondence with the BMW NA engineer I will switch to using Mobil 1 0w-40 for my mid-term oil change (or use BMW oil if possible). Thanks again for everyones research. This whole thread could have been avoided if BMW did not have typos in their manuals (but none of us are perfect). |

Just wondering... but why doesn't anyone use Amsoil 5w40? o_O
That's what I use in my BMWs ... it has LL-04 on it, so I think its okay... Is there any reason people seem to be avoiding it? |

Just because Amsoil recommends it for LL-04 applications means it has been certified by BMW. Mobil and Castrol have been certified and you better belive that getting that approval cost dough. Don't go blindly recommending stuff now. Last edited by 300B; 10-10-2006 at 12:13 PM.. |

I like to go by the owners manual recommendations and here is what they say:"BMW continously approves specific oils after confirming their suitability for use in it's vehicles with extensive testing." Page 120 Also in the service and warranty information book on page 4 it states: "At the time of this printing of this booklet, the following oils are strongly recommended and approved by BMW" BMW HP 5W30 M1 5W30 M1 5W40 This info applies to all 06 E90's sold here in the US. I like to use thinnest group 4 oil I can use. It will result in better fuel economy and less wear. |

Look, I don’t think people are disputing that the owners manual says to use M1 5-30. Just that it may be a typo as the 5-30 in Europe is different oil, and that may be where it came from. Mobil in the US only lists 0-40 as applicable for a modern BMW, so that is what I use. You are free to use what ever oil you want. It’s your car.
I agree with your reasoning for oil choice, but am curious about your statement of less wear. Is that based on the fact that a thinner oil will get up into the head and cyl. faster on start up? If so, wouldn't the 0-40 do a better job as it has a lower cold viscosity? Quote:

Yes thinner oils will circulate faster, important in an engine like the N52. M1 0W40 is thicker at start up vs M1 5W30 until you get around to -40f,then it overtakes it. M1 5W30 is also VERY shear stable so it will protect very well. |

E90 fleet: Thank you for all the great informaiton you have provided so far. I don't want to get into too much detail, but based on the last quote from the engineer you spoke with, would I be correct to assume the BMW oil is a better choice than Mobil 1 0W - 40 because its additive package was specifically designed for BMW by Castrol? I picked up 7 qts of Royal Purple at the PX for 57 bucks.
I am conducting my oil change today or tomorrow. For those with twin turbos...I found this http://www.royalpurple.com/prodsa/rpro.html |

As far as know BMW has had a long relationship with Castrol products in the past. I would use Castrol Syntec and would go for performance type 0W-40.
Ask your dealer, what they advise and what is BMW Oil they use. Mobil Syntetic is also good but I think Castrol is better. |

I buy single malt scotch that's priced over $40 for 750 ml... if Amsoil is $10/qt, the scotch has to be better!
