Do you put Run-flat tire for snow tire or you'll carry a spare tire?

Not in Ontario. But it's legal to use studded winters or chain in BC.

And we get a lot more snow here tho..

According to BMW Canada...best time to put on winter tires is when average temperatures drop below 7 degrees celsius.

Tirerack just did a test that included both studded and studless tire in some tests on ice and found that the studless tires actually did better on ice than studded tires. Check out the video

I will hold off a bit. Maybe middle of November. Right now the days are still fairly warm and winter tires will wear very quickly in these temps. Of coarse, it is that time of the year where the weather could turn nasty and we could get some snow. You just never know. Keep an eye on the forecast and if they call for cold and/or snow then it is time.

I hate studded tires they are too noisy and they ruin road feedback.

Not true. The law changed and last year was the first year that people having an address in the north of Ontario (starting in Nort Bay) can have studded winter tires. They cannot go on before a certain date and have to be removed before another date.

As far as I'm concerned, Markham is the freaking snowbelt. If you're going to work at 6:30 a.m., I'd look at getting them put in the next two weeks. If you're like me and don't head into the office until early afternoon, wait a couple of weeks longer -- and pray it doesn't snow while you're there.

One interesting observation: In the winter when I go home from work driving north from the 407 very often I don't see snow until Hwy 7, accumulation starts at Major Mac, and lawns all cover with snow when I reach Elgin Mills. I cannot do without winter tires.

I use Blizzak WS-50 for the mini van, and Dunlop M3 runflat for both BMW's. When I had the A6 I used to have Pirelli Wintersport 240. My old 91 Passat used to have Blizzak WS-50. I have not stuck once all these years.

Once I was in downtown Montreal in my Passat, looking for a parking spot. This guy in a Taurus wagon was hopelessly stuck in a parallel parking spot spinning his front wheels in two ice pits. I got out of my car, pushed him out, and took his spot without any trouble! Another time I was in the same Passat looking for a parking spot midtown Toronto and there was nothing left except this one spot on the curb side filled with icy packed snow, about a foot high on one side. I pulled in, parked the car on a 20 degree incline on this mountain of ice, climbed in and out with no trouble.

When I first moved into the new house up here we had a gravel driveway for the first winter. Instead of clearing snow after each major snow fall, I used to drive my car up and down to pack it down neatly.

A set of good winter tire is worth its weight in gold. I should have recorded those moments and made commercials for the tire companies.

I have mine on already I went with SNOWPROX S952 on a BMW M5 Style Style 166 Replica rim. I have to say it looks as good as my OWM 162s. The Toyo was pricey but I know it's a good tire

This is only part of the equation, the road/track temperature is more important than air temperature to select the correct tires.

As most of the roads are paved in asphalt in Canada, if there is sunlight available, they absorb a lot of heat during the day. Therefore, the air temperature may be 0 C or 2 C, but the road temperature could be as high as 5 C - 10 C.

I'm planning for end of Nov or even early Dec. Like Picus, I also hate wearing down my snow tires unnecessarily. I find the snows are great once there is that dewy-type of precipitation on the ground, that almost sticks around all day. You know when the roads are just mucky and sort of wet.

Man this winter is gonna be hard.

I'm not sure why someone would apparently want better snow traction by buying AWD, then not go all the way and have the ultimate traction of snow tires and AWD.

When I had my X3, the difference with snow tires was like night and day. I would never, repeat NEVER drive in snow without snow tires, AWD or not.
