N54 Water Pump

When reinstalling everything last night i noticed i wasn't missing a bolt, one broke off! I'm guessing this car had a water pump replacement before i purchased it and they over tightened the bolt and broke it. I'm sure it will be fine with 1 bolt on the bottom and 1 bolt on the top.

I bought my car when the lease expired so it's under CPO extended warranty. Anybody know if this warranty covers the pump? Btw, I'm now at 49k miles on my '07.

Did you try to back the bolt out? They are just alum. bolts. They are easy to get out, just spin it with a pick.

CPO will cover the pump

A buddy of mine just replaced his at 52k or so. last month i think. E90 2007. CPO covered it and was out $50.

I would, it's a PITA to get to the thermostat. It's under $100.00 for the part and no additional labor while doing the water pump install.

Bringing up an old thread but wanted to chime in...

120,000 on the clock and the SES light came on. I ran the BavTech and found codes for the Tstat and water pump. I ran some tests and the water pump was still getting voltage so.....the dreaded change was today.

Give yourself time if you plan to do this yourself and it's your first time. This is a pain in the arse. The toughest part was getting the hoses off the Tstat. Like you have read, be ready for a bit of a coolant shower and splash if you're not paying attention.

Anyway, local dealers did not have the pump in stock, for some reason. I ended up ordering from ECS Tuning and the prices were the best through them. I got everything taken out Monday and plan to get it back together Tuesday afternoon.

My opinion is, if you don't really want to get too into repairing your car, take it to a dependable shop. It's worth the money spent to have them do it, IMO. I enjoy crawling under my car so I didn't mind tackling this myself. There are some good write-ups and advice if you search a bit before trying it yourself.

Totally agree. This took me 12 hours because I didn't find this thread first. I took out the pump THEN the thermostat. Even the pesky bolt on the pump behind the thermostat didn't throw me for as much of a loop as getting those damn hose camps off. The stupid ones with the circlips refused to budge and without proper leverage (since the pump was out), it was a lot of skin scraping and acrobatics while on the lift to get a finger (1 finger!) on one end of the house and a fist around the t-stat to rip that mother off. Times two!

I shouldve ripped the hoses off the tstat first, then tackled the pump. Thingss would have been so much smoother. And I mistakenly removed the intercooler and fan in an effort to get more room. None was found. Useless and cost another hour getting both on and off. To add insult to injury, I forgot to fasten the hose for the intercooler so now I'm getting the boost code while driving. I gotta get it back on the lift, fasten it up, and hopefully then I'll finally be done.

Last but not least, I think I got the mix wrong. I put in a gallon of coolant, and was going to follow it up with a gallon of distilled, but it only took half a gallon before overflowing. Drove it home and it took a quarter or so before overflowing. So, effectively, I have more coolant in the block than water! My temps are about 5 to 10 degrees higher than before I tackled this job.

I gotta dump fluid while i refasten the intercooler and top up with distilled. HOPefully that will fix everything. sigh.

Just to add to this:

Mine failed around 60k. Good friend of mine also with a 2007 335, his failed first around 70k then again, not even 6 months later. According to the shop he took it to, BMW no longer offers new pumps and all of them are refurbs. I linked him to some aftermarket ones on Amazon for around $400 -- the shop wanted like $700 I believe.
