Just has a chat with VOSA following the submission of my defect report and their conclusion is that this is not a safety defect under their code of practice.

BMW claim that they have only sold a small number of the breather pipes, stating that there has only been a small number of cars that have seen this problem.

BMW also state that their manual says that when you fill a tank of fuel and the pump cuts out, thats it, tank is full. At this point VOSA say there may only be a small amount of fuel in the breather pipe which is only a breather pipe and should not hold any fuel anyway.

Even though you may get a small amount of a leak with a small amount of fuel in the breather pipe, VOSA say that this is a small risk and not a significant risk.

Hi all,

I have the same issue on my recently purchased E91 330D SE. It has full BMW history & has just passed 60k miles.

I have been in contact with the garage I bought it from as I have a warranty with them. Unfortunatley they are over 200 miles away so to save a trip they are asking for the part number of the breather in question so they can get a quote from their repairer for a fix. They say they will give me the cost that they would pay their repairer for me to have it fixed elsewhere & save the time & cost of me travelling up there etc.

My question is does anyone know the part number for the breather? I have found the page on realoem but am not totally sure which part it is?? http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...95&hg=16&fg=05

I has this issue fixed on my 330i petrol car.

The parts I needed were:

The breather pipe part number is: B16.12.6.765.748
The protective tubing part number is: B16.12.4.390.434

I think the pipe is the same for a diesel car but just check with any BMW parts department. They will confirm for sure.

I can see the breather pipe part number on the realoem page for the E91 but not the protective tubing? I can see that if I change to the E90 it is there?!? I will call the dealer in the morning & ask......

It would appear that I do need both parts, spoke with the delaer today & the corregated, copex type stuff was added as an 'in conjuction with' type part a while back.

They may not admit it but of course they know it is an issue, hence the new bit to protect the pipe!!

Resurrecting an old thread I know but I've just discovered that my 2006 E61 330i has exactly this problem

I've only had the car for a week - it's going in to my local indie next week for them to have a look at.

I will also file a VOSA defect report. I could get the dealer I bought it off to fix it but as they are 150 miles away and I need the car here it's probably not going to happen.

Furious that BMW UK haven't acknowledged this as a problem!

Make contact with BMW UK and get them to contribute to the job if you want to get this fixed by a BMW dealer. See how much your indie will charge you. BMW will quote you around £600 to you and me but actually costs them like £300 to do and you get BMW UK to pay something towards the bill and you generally end up paying about £200, but at least the work is covered by BMW for 2 years then.

If you get it done by a non-BMW garage, read one of my replies, it will detail the parts you need.

If you need contact details of the manager at BMW UK, pm me for details, I have his direct line

VOSA may be a dead end as I have already challenged them about this, but I guess the more people who raise this, they may take more note!

I'm guessing that the cost is really labour - any idea how many hours the work takes? My indie is only £45/hr so even with a goodwill payment may still be cheaper.

I'm guessing they need to drop the exhaust and prop shaft before they drop the tank? Sounds like a good few hours...

My BMW dealer had the car for the whole day but I think it took them at least 1/2 day.

Ironic as the parts cost about £30.00. Don't think the exhaust was removed, but the diff is removed to drop the tank as it is a saddle back tank.

The dealer will follow the guidelines set by BMW NA to execute the repair.

I had a leak in my vent hose going from my carbon canister to the fuel tank....I was quoted $1700 to replace the $52 vent hose.

Apparently, they need to drop the whole rear suspension setup, along with the fuel tank. Install the new hose and reverse....14+ hours.

I first fixed my hose with a union joint and 2 screw clamps for $6.....then later took 2 hours to drop the carbon canister, fuel tank, and fish the hose up over the rear subframe and connected it to the fuel tank.

So yes....it's all labor.

This is a bit more involved than the breather hose, but still ridiculous.

I think this leak is in the filler vent pipe which is well forward of the suspension, not the vent pipe going to the carbon canister which is over the rear suspension - that would really be a massive PITA.

I know but it's all part of the evap system....I was just sharing my story and how much dealers will charge JUST for labor. Which was about $1650 before tax to replace a $53 vent pipe.

After all was said and done...I paid $135 diag fee which was pointless because I knew where the leak was but the dealer had to run a smoke test even after I pointed out the location to them.

And $60 for the $6 clamps/union joint and the new part for $52.

So just under $200 compared to $1700.

Agree with the dealer labour charges, they're crazy here too - I only buy 5 year old cars so use indies . Only dealer I use is for my Triumph Bonneville, and they are very reasonable, and as the bike never misses a beat, it's just regular services. I really wish cars were as reliable as bikes

Please see attached copy of BMW E90 parts diagram for fuel tank/mounting parts. You can see clearly that from July 2006 vehicles were fitted with a protective tube to prevent this from happening all vehicles before this date were not fitted with this tube. BMW still maintain that the customer is liable VOSA are investigating.

I just got this leak on my car today after filling the tank up. This is only the third time I've filled it right up since buying it, never had the problem before.
The pic was taken about 1 minute after parking up back at home, hence the patch isn't that big (I deliberately parked on the road rather than on my drive, as I saw the leak when parked up in Asda carpark).
My car is on an 06 plate, not sure date of manufacture.
I've got extended warranty, but a bit miffed that I'll have to pay the £250 excess.
Anyone have a contact at BMW uk to complain to. I'll file a report with VOSA too.

It stinks when a weak point is difficult to replace/inaccessible. The hose reminds me of the spray hose you have in a kitchen faucet--the faucet may be high end, like $800+, but the hose is a $20 part made in China, and it strains everytime you use it, where the sprayer meets the hose, eventually breaking and leaking down the hose under the sink.

Maybe not practical but if so much labor is involved, then double the cost of producing the hose so it lasts longer. But cars are designed around a 3 yr. lease and extended warranty model.

Hi i have just found the exact problem on my 55 plate 330d....had the car a week and i brimmed it yest and made sure it was as full is full and a small leak on my driveway..but now i have covered 60 mile no leak...so it mist be.the over flow pipe thing
the top end of the over flow pipe,how does it connect up?because i am thinking of putting a smaller bot of pipe down into the overflow pupe to save.the stupid costs of getting it.repaired....
