Radiator Fan Cycling

Hey all,

I noticed a strange behavior on the way in to work this morning. The radiator fan was coming on and cycling slow and then fast repeatedly. It was nice and cool outside so the engine should have no issue staying cool. I am a little worried my water pump may be on its way out. I have the platinum extended warranty so that should not be an issue but I was hoping to see if this is a common sign of imminent failure.

I do have JB4 but I cam not seeing any codes. Would the JB4 be able to pull the shadow codes for a failing water pump?

Put water temp on oil and see if it is getting high and that is why the fan is turning on.

I've had this issue intermittently in the last month or so too. It only has happened when the car is cold. I asked the dealer and he did not think it had to do with the waterpump. He thought it was along the lines of a thermostat or a sensor issue.

So I just got back from a drive and put water temp on fuel--highest gauge went was just over the quarter mark...not even near the halfway spot, so I assume water temp is good.

I would guess 190-210 is normal. I'm dealing with a bad pump so started watching the temp after I over heated. So I can't really say what normal is yet.

I think nothing is normal with these cars..everything is learning..maybe until there are no more e90's out there.

So...my car just overheated..guess it's dealer time. I already have an appt. with the dealer for odd transmission shifting. I just took jb4 off and did a code clear but I am wondering if I cleared the overheat code or will they still be able to figure out it has a cooling problem.

So I guess the question is, is if I cleared codes with jb4 and they don't see any codes will they say nothing is wrong even though fan runs crazy and coolant is all over engine compartment?

So dealer called and they are replacing the water pump. And fixing oil gasket leak as well. My car has 26k miles on it and I asked the SA if I will need another pump in 25K miles and he said good probability. So these things are designed to be replaced by 30k.

I think its more of a time, not miles. But people get anywhere from 20k-120k miles out of them. I got 70k and 4 years. The job is pretty easy to DIY, just make sure they replace the thermostat too while they are in there.

They won't replace the thermostat--I asked them to do it and they said they can only get authorized to replace failed parts even though it is easy to change the thermostat once they are there.

Well maybe just buy it and ask them to replace it. It is $170 from the dealer here.

Yeah..job is already done so I guess I'll have to wait...I have two years of CPO going to start in a month so at least I have that piece of mind.

Well even more weird. I just drove for a while this morning and when I parked the fan was running pretty constant. I don't think it was at full speed though. I pulled codes with my JB4 and it went "30-70-100". That doesn't seem to be a valid code though. It translates to 37A but codes are 4-digits, no?

Any thoughts? I live in constant fear of my "Ultimate Driving Machine" stranding my butt on I-5. :-(

It stopped on one of those numbers longer im guessing. Tripped me up the first time. Pay close attention to which one it seems to pause on and that is your double number. Also, its summer so i'm not too surprised your fan was running when you parked.

Probably. I found code 0x377A in my handy tech code list. There is no associated DTC for it but it is listed as "Coolant pump, shutdown: Pump blocked". The code cleared when I restarted the car.

More evidence that my water pump is on its way out.

BTW, it was 65 degrees this morning so it was certainly not hot enough to have the fan running like it was.

Yeah, it probably is the pump or thermostat then. I would just replace both while you are at it. It is not too difficult of a DIY.
