My turbo on the way out?? 2005 320D SE
Hi all
I have recently noticed when I rev past 1.5k - 2k my turbo makes a whistle sound that is moderately loud....the whistle only happens when the turbo 'spools' up?? the car still drives fine and accelerates perfectly but im very conscious something is going to happen to the turbo... In addition to this last week i was overtaking on the motor way and experienced a second of lag and then it was fine again....it hasnt happened again since then.... im proper worried as i really dont have the funds to be replacing a turbo as i can understand it can cost up to £2k!!! a proper sad and worried Miss Cat |

Hi i would get it checked out asap. Could possibly be the bearings in the turbo are on the way out. Two work colleges have replaced turbos on there 320ds in the past six months. It cost them £1000 parts and labour for their recon turbos. It seems to be a common enough problem mind both had around 100000 miles on them.

Hi I've got a e91 325 m sport 3.0 version the turbo makes a noise only quiet to be honest at about 2k revs. Doesn't sound horrible or anything I always thought that was just the noise of the turbo kicking in. Power is great. Still drives nice in my opinion, worried now after reading this!

there is no down on power at all at the moment and runs very smooth but just conscious of the whistling noise it makes at the moment =(
mine has only done 55k atm! just seems too early for the turbo to go pop =( Im looking to book it in tuesday....should i take it to a local specialist or a local mechanic hoping they should know enough about the turbo?!?! Also gonna be very sneaky and test driving a local 320D for sale to compare the turbo noise lol =P |

My E46 330d-remapped, whistling has always been fairly loud, 3 years and around 35,000 miles later still pulls spot on
But I would get this checked still just in case- Specialist over local (not knowing how good your local mech is btw). Last edited by Meshyo; 09-02-2012 at 03:48 PM.. |

If you have the engine warm just feather the throttle till about the 2000 rpm range and drop the revs.
If it whistles when the revs are coming down it is slightly out of balance. With the window down and in a built up area , sink the toe into it and it should make a woooosh sound on acceleration and then let the revs drop and if it whistles there is something not right. Out of balance meaning damage has occurred to the turbine shaft or compressor wheel. I bought spares for my turbo and rebuilt it. Job took me 4 hours from start to finish. Most garages wouldn't have a clue about how a turbo works so be very careful as they will see pound sign and tell you you need a new one. The mitsibushi turbo is not a bad unit. I stripped my turbo down and rebuilt it as preventive maintenance at 11000 and there was about .3 of a mm of wear on the bearings. which is not bad for the mileage, the seal had worn on the compressor side putting to much oil in my intercooler. Parts £150.00 After rebuild sitting at 126000 and I just remapped it to 200 bhp and it still pulls like a train, it is a very good diesel engine. Rudolph diesel would be proud of it!! 320d m sport 2006 mitsibushi turbo. If you need help just ask. Turbo's are very simple, but brilliant! |

jkas1984 - when the revs drop the whistle fades away, it does not carry on whistling until i throttle it past 2k revs when it sounds like the turbo is 'spooling'??
im not the most savvy with DIY so gotta take it local to get it looked at if it needs rebuilding =( my local indy is charging me £55 just to inspect it for an hour =/ seem steep or reasonable?? Miss Cat xxx |

How loud is this whistle? All derv turbos that I've owned whistle or whoosh to a certain extent.
From my experience of several years on this forum and reading numerous threads about the mitsubishi turbos on 320s. It seems to me that there is usually no warning. |

its deffo noticeable...but not sounding like a siren yet which i was advised would be the warning signals to the turbo failing....im gonna go test drive a couple of 320d's tomorrow and see if it sounds the same =P

If you are around my side, give me a shout and I will do some code reading and bit more testing.

No regrets, whatever decision I have taken so far. Test drive few 320ds and if not happy, feel free to give me a shout.
