Need Help Deciding!

Hey guys my name is Cristian!

I'm here to ask for some personal opinions....
Here's my story:
Hurricane Sandy came through North New Jersey, and I had a beautiful modified APR Tuned Stage III 08' Volkswagen GTI Coupe. The hurricane flooded my GTI, and of course it was floating away... I jumped in dirty water that was at least 6FT deep, just to push my baby back into the driveway. I wasn't pushing much but it did beat most the Neon SRT4's and Honda Civics bubbles/coupe/sedan etc. with my GTI. I talked to APR tuning and they aren't insuring my aftermarket items. Obviously my insurance company isn't paying for it either. In total i lost about $6,350. So the insurance company is paying me $18,000 for my car and I owe about $5,000 on the car, so that leaves me at an inaccurate amount of $13,000. I never thought I'd be buying a BMW, but my brother is an E46 Fanatic with an M3. So he said Volkswagen, AUDI, and BMW are all German engineering... Regardless your going to love it. So I shopped around and found an "Alpine White 2007 BMW 328xi Coupe" with 72,300 miles on it for around $15k. Am I making the right decision by buying a 328xi ? or are there a larger variety of E90+ BMW's I could afford (P.S: Down payment of course.) ??? Need as many opinions as possible!!!!

THANK YOU ALL FOR READING AND PARTICIPATING IN MY DECISION!
- CRISTIAN CEMOPHORA

Yea dude AWD BMW is fine with me and my GTI was FWD 6SPEED MANUAL.. I don't really mind if the 328xi is manual or not... I'm going more for looks and sound, instead of performance this time. $3k in tickets is enough experience for me especially since I'm only 18... -.-

Damn... Sorry for your loss man

You could try searching for a 2006 323i or 325i (not sure how it works in the US) for around that price so you don't have to add any more money on top.

Yea I looked into 323's and 325's but I find the 328, 330, and 335 so much more worth getting. I don't mind spending the money at all, well owing them money I just hope to get a car good enough to put 13g as a down payment.

No GTI was ever AWD...

@OP: You drove a modded car, are you sure you want a 28i? An engine that is practicly untuneable...?

Go for it man! You are getting a good price if its only 15k for a coupe. A 328's performance would be similar to a stock GTI, if your car was heavily tuned, you might feel the car to be not quick enough.

As you stated, you are going more for the ride this time. This car will deliver more comfort, premium quality materials, and BMW's unbeatable drive. If I were you and had the option, I would spend more and go for the 335i. Its subtle and looks like another 3er (if you don't mod it) and hopefully that will reduce your tickets significantly.

Well I thought about it for about a week or two now constantly. If I get a 335.... I'm going to want to do performance.... I know myself. I can't have a stock turbo and not do performance lol, that's why I figured the 328xi would help me alot. Its a sick ride, comfortable from what I can see, and sporty, + X drive is definitely going to come handy. I just want people's opinions so I can gather them all up and think clearly.

I'm honestly not 100% sure, because I drove a beautifully modded car. But that's why I'm looking to see everyone's opinions. I'm gonna have this car for a while and I hope I pick the right one, instead of waking up and driving a car that I regret buying.

The 328xi Coupe is an excellent car and 15K is super low even with 72K miles. But as others have said, they're sort of hard to squeeze power out.. You could probably get 270hp at the crank with every power adding option that I know available, i.e. 3 stage manifold, AA tune, exhaust, cat delete.. If that is fine for you, then I'd go for it.. Those cars are super reliable to boot. BTW, If you choose a 328 I'd look for a manual. I know you said you didn't care, but I think you just might after you buy the car and have it for a few weeks.

I think you will be bored soon... If you have the mod virus once you will never loose it... And a car with an engine that is untuneable... If you can, buy an N54...

I think its a smart move! I know if I had a 335 I'd be spending tons more money on it performance wise. With the 328 sport package the ride and handling is great and the engine is just fine IMO. Some day I'll make that jump to an M or 335 but for now the car suits my needs just fine. I'm also very young still and I know if my car was faster I'd be more willing to race as well. The 328 looks hot, drives nice, and helps keep me out of trouble!

328 is an excellent choice but since you're coming from a tuned GTI, I can't help but want to recommend that you get a 335i instead. You can squeeze some good power out of it with just a piggyback tune like JB4 or Procede for a few hundred bucks if you wanted to. Just my thoughts.

If you really want to avoid the mod bug and money sink, the 328 would be a good move as long as you won't hate yourself later for not having enough power. You will have a nice car, with options and looks good.

I just traded in my 08 GTI with stage 2 unitronic, AWE full exhaust, suspension, wheels etc. for an 09 e92 328i M sport. I had 70k on the GTI and wanted something more comfortable for work travel and something with a warranty. You seem to have gotten a good deal from insurance considering my trade in fetched less than that with all mods attached. Regardless, I got the BMW with 24k miles CPO to 100k or 10/27/15, whichever comes first. IMHO, BMW is a much better vehicle. The GTI was fun and nimble, but I was tired of fwd and the noise from the exhaust and larger tires. I do miss it though from time to time.
