The Wagon/Touring (E91). Why?
I understand the E91 Touring is popular in parts of Europe (UK, Germany), and I can't understand why this is not true in the US. To me, it's HOT and I love them. Why don't Americans agree? True, it's not very big and Americans like their big SUVs. Any ides?

Probably a cultural thing, but I'm no anthropologist. Bottom line is, they don't sell nearly as well in the U.S. as Europe. BMW is not bringing an F3x wagon to the U.S., so sad day for wagon owners. Get an E91 while they're hot ...

If there was an E91 335i I'd be on it so quick...
But there's a big anti-wagon stigma in the us. Just like the anti-diesel stigma. Look at what Subaru had to do to the Outback. Looks more like a minivan now.

I dont get it either. I bought a 535 SW w/ 6mt and love it. A 335 wagon or a 335d wagon would be perfect. One of my favorite cars that I've had was a B5 S4 Avant. I guess you either like them or you dont. People like to say big SUV's are "safer". I would argue the opposite. I feel safe when my car stops, accelerates, and turns well. SUV's do none of those well (Suburban/Tahoe/Yukon etc). The fact is with all the gigantic cars we have on our roads in the US, people buy gigantic SUV's just to defend themselves from other gigantic SUV's.

I love wagons too - I'd be all over a 335 wagon. Next car will most likely BE a wagon - but there are so few to choose from
Used to have a slammed Passat and it was a fun car. |

Wagons are just plain ugly to some people, including me. I don't really care about the utilitarian aspect of it, it's ugly and I won't drive it. I'd rather keep a SUV on the side for hauling stuff and hitting the mountains. |

Taxes on cars along with fuel prices are higher in Europe. People prefer to have a workhorse that does almost everything rather than having multiple cars to suit their needs. Wagons are so popular because they offer the driving dynamics of a normal sedan along with the added storage space that comes with an SUV, along with better fuel consumption and CO2 emission figures.
However here in the US we had the SUV craze + cheap gas, and the "station wagon" stigma never really went away. I'd say it's more of an image thing for some people. BMW knows the majority of people here would rather have an SUV instead of a wagon, hence why we get things like the X6 and 5GT now instead of a 5-series touring

The new CTS-V has a wagon!!! I would love to trade my SUV in for a badass wagon. The RS-3 doesn't cut it for me but that Caddy might do the trick.

I've had two sport wagons - V70R and an S4 Avant. The best part was they were sleeper cars - especially the Volvo. The kids are older and we have a minivan now, so no need for the wagons.

Its a cultural/style thing just like everything else that's different btwn north America and EU. Plus they are ugly
Now my question is how can north Americans hate the wagon but love their minivans??? I hate both equally.

Yeah, Wagons went out of style when SUVs came in. Really the Touring is a lowered SUV and way more practical! But the higher seating/view is a plus with the SUVs. Think that's why Crossovers are becoming popular. Most of the SUV capabilities, and fewer of the Ride/mileage tradeoffs.

Its a mentality thing, "bigger is better"
I used to hate those "station wagon" but somehow the EU cars makes it look better. I guess American cars just don't know how to design stuff, majority of the cars are just ugly.

Tracy -
There is about to be one more 3-wagon in the PDX area next week. I ordered a one-owner, CPO, from Texas. There were a few up here, but they were all the Xi versions. It seems the 2wd versions all went to the Southern states. I have been a 3-coupe driver for long time. The bride has been using my car too much and we decided one of these would be the perfect mom-wagon. I can't wait to get the suspension done and go tear up the sports cars at PIR. - Z |

I live in the UK, and in Europe the 'wagon' accounts for about 50% of sales on BMW 3&5's and Audi A4/A6
I love mine (330D), goes like a rocket ship, and gets 45mpg+ on the run (low 30's around town) Can't fault mine. No idea why they aren't popular in the USA, but likewise, in Europe over 50% of sales of this size/range of cars are now Diesel's and not petrol due to fuel prices/taxing, so until you guys start to have to pay for fuel, I assume that the SUV will be king over there. |
