Bumper stuck to curb and pulled off on one side
Pulled up to a curb too far apparently. and when reversing, my bumper pulled off from the car on the left side. Looking for advice on how to repair this if possible.

Looks like some broken clips from this angle.
Buy new clips and fit the fender liner. I believe the headlight is attached to to the bumper somehow so check to see if the mounts are broken. Not too bad otherwise.

Headlight isn't attached, but it looks like at the minimum you'll need to get the part that the screw threads into. I can't remember the part number, but it goes in your fender and is a piece of plastic that the 2 screws/bolts that hold the bumper to the fender thread into. I had to buy one, they're pretty cheap.
Since it's plastic, if you pulled the screws out, it's stripped. And see if you tore the fender liner when the bumper pulled loose. |

This is a coupe, which means that your fenders are plastic. The screws that hold the end of the bumper (there are two of them) are screwed from the bottom into a square metal clip/nut located on the inner side of the fender. When you were backing up, that metal nut was forcefully pulled through the plastic of the fender and ripped a hole in it. In your picture, you can see one of the screws with the clip still on it. (The question is, where is the second screw? Did it remain in the fender? Did it fall out entirely?)
You will have to repair the damaged are on the fender where the nut was originally (relatively easy, since in assembled state it is not visible from outside) and assemble everything back. Again, the question is where the second screw is. And what damage it did as it was getting ripped out. It is hard to see in that picture. You are lucky you didn't split your plastic fenders like this: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=351424 Last edited by AndreyT; 05-12-2014 at 03:46 PM.. |

Interesting, thanks for the tips. I am not very good at working on cars, I wonder if I take it to a shop if it would be pretty cheap to have done. I will upload more photos here in the next message.

Next time that happens have someone lift the car up by the fender and pull out slowly. (e90 guys only, e92 has plastic fenders so they can potentially snap)

You might be able to drill a new hole near the factory hole (on the last picture) and remount it. If there's an alignment tab or something that was broken, it may not be as ridged as before though...

Strangely when I pulled up to park, I did not hear or feel any rubbing of the bumper to the curb. And when I reversed it was stuck enough to pull it apart, bad luck indeed.

Dang, one of my fears too. I purposely park with my butt sticking out a bit cause of this. GL hopefully it's an easy fix and not a huge hit on the wallet.

I did that too to avoid hitting the parking block since my car is lowered. Then I noticed someone backed into my car when I came back from Starbucks. Probably the most expensive Frap ever. Had to get my bumper resprayed. Luckily the bumper wasn't cracked.

Well, did you by any chance gain some weight between the moment you parked and the moment you began to pull out in reverse? You know, Starbucks pastries... Or maybe gold bars from the bank... This can also happen if front tire(s) lost some air while the car was parked. (I'm not sure if thermal expansion/contraction of air in the tires can produce enough variation in clearance. Probably not.)

You may have to replace the bumper. AndreyT described how the bumper is attached with those screws. Usually when the bumper is ripped like that the plastic parts that the screws go through are ripped and the edge of the bumper won't fit properly any more.

So it turns out one of the two clips ripped off, but the other is still intact. Me and my father are going to try and fix it.
Would the fender have to be completely removed to do this, or can it just be lifted up? Also, does anyone know where we could see a diagram of this area of the car? |

Diagrams can be found on tischerbmw, realOEM, etc. But you shouldn't have to remove the fender. The screws are accessed from inside the wheel well by removing the wheel and pulling back the fender liner.

You probably didn't hear it cuz of the loud bass from your electro music . This problem can be easily avoided if you lower your car. My car is so low it would never clear curbs and the parking dividers. Thus forcing you to keep a little distance from the curb After this incident, you can now justify spending on coilovers and new front bumper. Not a bad way to look at the situation right? Lol |
