I guess this was a failed attempt, anyone have any experience with alpine ex-10 or harmon kardon dp2 which is similar?

But what is nice about this kit is it gives you the ability to add HD, Bluetooth, Ipod, Sirius, etc. Some of these are separate modules so be prepared to pay a little more. But it should end up costing less than the dealership. I think they want something like $500 just for iPod alone. If you have a phone that can go into mass storage mode and has a USB connection you could charge your phone and play the media files on it. The reason why I'm not pulling the trigger on this kit is I wish they would have added navigation control for a nav module and a color display for it. I like the Kenwood/Garmin navigation units. There is the KOS-V1000 but now that unit is also dated and we don't need the built in amp. I'm hoping they will follow up with units that will have these updated features and meant to be integrated through the AUX in. In the meantime, this is a pretty nice unit for music and bluetooth only.

Doesn't the Aux have limited fidelity?
Doesn't the Aux have limited fidelity?
I have seen some threads that say the audio fidelity is low through the Aux because its analog. Last edited by ctuna; 09-25-2010 at 02:07 AM.. |

[QUOTE=badfish;8052779]How clean it is depends on how you install it. The only thing cleaner are the OEM options.

There is a wire between the wheel and box but an installer would hide it. It looks like in the video they installed the unit into a 3 series so you get an idea of how it would look in the E90 or E92. Wireless would be nice but the technical reasoning behind that probably has to do with IR transmission between controller and control unit.

It looks like they used some sort of mounting cup in the video. I doubt this comes with it but I could be wrong. Anyone have any idea? I like the way its a very clean install. Even better if I could have the screen mounted where the covered storage / ash tray etc is. God knows that will never ever get use in my car.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread.
Has anyone got a picture of a clean install of this KOS-A300 product on an E92 (or even an E90)? I would be interested in mounting the display in the ashtray, and the clickwheel control thing tucked away in the cubby hole (see picture of my E92 below). How difficult do you think a clean install would be? Is the cable needed to connect to the iPod specific to Kenwood, or is it just a regular iPod USB cable? Would it be possible to have an iPod cable coming out of the ashtray (since I would like to mount my iPhone in that area to be used as a GPS)? An alternative I have considered is having an iPod dedicated to music in the car (such as the glove box or centre console). This iPod would be connected to the Kenwood. I would then need an additional iPod cable coming out of the ashtray simply for charging my iPhone when being used as a GPS. Hopefully this amber colour option closely resembles the BMW Amber. It seems like you are able to change the colour of the clickwheel as well, but I hope there is an option to turn off the clickwheel light completely. I am really considering this also. Has anyone actually installed this in there vehicle? A DIY would be awesome! From looking at the equipment, i'm not really sure where to put the "brain".

I bought one on sale from Crutchfield and I'm looking for some install pictures/ideas as well.

I actually changed my mind and decided to buy a Tunelink bluetooth adapter instead. So far I really like it! It automatically pairs with the phone every time I get in the car. The only disadvantage is that you have to control the iPod using the iPod itself.
http://www.newpotatotech.com/TUNELIN...link_auto.html There is a unit for both the iPhone and the Android. |

I finally got my unit installed, see pictures below. Forgive the crappy cell phone pics!
Full view Close up on the display unit It took me a while to get the display and control knob colors synced because the instructions aren't very accurate but the unit looks great and sounds fantastic! The display amber is almost an exact match to the BMW color. Last edited by seb5150; 09-26-2011 at 08:36 PM.. Reason: Additional info added. |

Excellent install! Looks nice and clean! Can you elaborate a little on how you did wiring, where you put the main box, and how you secured everything? Did you have to drill any holes? Any issues at all with it? Thanks! |

X2. I've gathered the parts and am trying to decide if I want to do this myself or have an installer do it.

I had mine professionally installed just because I didn't want it to look like I did it. ;-) I've been very happy with the performance of the unit, it's the best $80 I've spent on my car.

I installed mine myself. Didnt take too long, but a little bit of cutting, drilling and it's in. I basically followed the install instructions for the BMW iPod interface (I bought one on ebay and it was a dud, unfortunately so tried the Kenwood instead). Follow here http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30079. You need to mount the box slightly higher behind the glove box to clear the wires. I pulled power from the homelink fuse in the fusebox. For now I have the LCD in the ash tray, but I am working on fabbing an inset mount where the center speaker is for some (I don't have obviously). Had to shape the controller mount just a bit to get it to fit on the console without bending it. It is definitely nice to have that control at your fingertips. For $50 from Crutchfield, well worth it!
