330d engine cutting out
Hi all
hope you an help my engine randomly cuts out which seems to be worse in hot conditions... to start with i noticed my radiator fan wasnt working so i changed this, and as i was getting random engine cutting off i replaced the crank sensor along with the fuel pump. But its still cutting out i have done some searching and saw that it could be fuel pump relay - does anyone know the location of this? camshaft sensor - simple swap or does it have to be calibrated? in tank fuel pump - sounds expensive! if you have any other ideas or help that would be very much appreciated! thanks |

I (meaning imho) always thought that random shutting off could be the DME, it was the case when my car was new (2-3 y.o.). After multiple extended visits to the dealership, BMW instructed the dealer to replace my DME. Never happened again....I mean I was used to it, driving in the right lane whenever possible so that if it shut off, I coasted to the shoulder, restarted, and was on my way. Because in my case, the only stored codes related to DSC, absolutely nothing else. The same would happen if you drove and manually shut the car off (if it's possible), so the codes told the dealer nothing at all....

yep....I remember back then it was taking days (I did not understand coding at all), they said that the new DME could not be programmed properly when I asked what is taking so long.....it was just very frustrating to have the car shut off for no reason, then there being no codes to say why....

i would have thought it would have struggled to start if it was a clogged dpf?
also thought the error would be shown on the idrive system if the dpf was seen to be clogged? hmm im not convinced though, happy to be wrong aslong as it gets fixed though!! hopefully find out tomorrow. DPF soundsd like a very expensive thing to change though |

Engine would cut out without warning. It would re-start OK most of the time but as soon as I would start rolling it would cut out again. BMW dealer could not find any problems so I took it to and independent garage and they found nr. 6 injector to be leaking. The fuel circuit on this engine send excess fuel not used by the fuel injectors back to the high-pressure diesel pump and not back to the fuel tank. The high-pressure fuel pump has a pressure sensor on this return line and if pressure gets too high it will shut off the in-tank fuel pump causing the engine to cut out. With the nr.6 injector being worn and leaking fuel back into the return line it caused high pressure in the return line and caused the fuel pump to shut off. Disconnect each injector, one at the time, and see which one is causing the problem or do a fuel flow test on each injector. Also check the fuel pressure sensor on the high-pressure fuel pump. If this sensor goes bad it could also shut off the in-tank fuel pump. |

I have a 328i n51 and was experiencing similar issues with the car just cutting off power and stranding me on the side of the road. It would only happen once the car has been warmed up and reached normal operating temp. Took it to two shops and then finally to the dealer where they fixed it with a new fuel pump and fuel pump relay under SULEV warranty. Hasn't happened ever since.

On the M57N2 the camshaft sensor is at the front of the engine next to the camshaft.
Disconnect the battery Disconnect the camshaft sensor Remove the securing bolt from camshaft sensor Remove the camshaft sensor |

In tank fuel pump.
Just a quick one for any future readers. I had the same issue and a diagnostic at a diesel specialist that showed the in tank fuel pump was 5 Bar down. It cost £400 to supply and fit the new part and it has worked faultlessly since.
